I noticed a few things that I would not say I did not know but foreshadowing. For one reading this as an adult makes me view things differently. On one hand I remember when I first read this book almost twenty years ago, by the end I was filled with a hopefulness for Harry and Company. Perhaps even as an adult reading this for the first time you will be left with a hopefulness as well. However having read the books and knowing what happens from here I am left with the same sort of feeling that I felt reading A Series of Unfortunate Events. The big difference being that Lemony does not veil the darkness of the tale. In Harry Potter I feel and felt that the first three books have a childish innocence (although the darkness of the story is present if you know what to look for), however the allusion that everything will be alright and there will be this happy ending where everyone rides off into the sunset is completely taken away by the end of book four. But I shall get to book four in a few days/weeks. Never the less I do not view Dumbledore through the same lens of innocence I once had. Hermione summed it up perfectly in my opinion:
“Well, Hermione exploded, “if he did- I mean to say - that’s terrible- you could have been killed.
Harry's response is that same lens of innocence I viewed Dumbledore through but again, that is a topic for future reread reviews lol. ...more

This is the second time *I think, it might be the third* i've read it. Which is ironic, because usually i find myself hating books where you are understand towards a man who kills his wife for any reason. However the whole story i'm rooting for Maxim and his young bride who is never named. The fact that Ms du Maurier never names her protagonist is great within itself. Not only that but she wrote in a way where I couldn't help but want a happy ending for the new Mrs de Winter. Not only that but the main characters have all the qualities I generally hate in heroines. She's shy, she doesn't stick up for herself, she is unsure of herself to the point of frustration and she blindly trust someone who obviously hates her. Regardless of all the qualities I generally hate, towards the end she did gain some gumption. Basically telling Ms. Danvers off as well as taking over the situation when Rebecca's body is found. All in all, I loved this book over 10 years ago when I first read it, and I love it still. ...more
