The marlin is just one of the large predatory fishes, and the life and peculiarities of various species are presented in a way that's easy to read.
Today, we have many threats to marine life, from overfishing to human activity runoff and oil spills, to ever-increasing plastic pollution. The better we understand what is in the ocean, the more we may be inspired to save this fragile ecosystem. We don't even know for sure what we've lost, but we do know that some seabirds, seals and whales were driven to extinction or the brink of it. While it was thought that fishes were so plentiful, they would always be a sure crop, we now see that industrial fishing and trawling along with industrial quantities of wasted dead fish and bycatch have led to fish stocks collapsing around the world. More marine sanctuaries are required and strict enforcements against illegal and unregulated fishing have to be applied.
I learned a lot from this book and hope it reaches a wide readership. I recommend pairing this with Antarctic Affair by Fergus O'Gorman and Hungry Ocean by Linda Greenlaw. I read an e-ARC from Net Galley. This is an unbiased review....more

It turns out, a murderer would, or someone involved in a murder coverup. So if something seems implausible, that's a major clue. A decorator who specialises in making over homes to look mid-twentieth century, goes to visit her new boyfriend's sister and brother-in-law. All does not seem well. Complicating matters is that our heroine has brought her dog and cat, which don't get along all that easily. It's so hot, the poor dog is getting burnt paws on the path, and the cat has to stay in the bedroom. When a ghostly face surfaces under the water of a local park's river, this sparks a hunt for a body, an identity, and a motive for killing. I enjoyed the read. A bit implausible, but as I say, seek the killer at such moments. I read a Kindle version. This is an unbiased review. ...more

It would teach children a lot of the facts about reproduction, through the story of the mare going to stud (with a rather stupid name of U-See-It, but it's a true story) and later drowsing her way through the months and producing a foal. So now the kids know where a foal comes from, and they see a young jockey and colt Black Gold learning together and starting to race. You should stop there, because greed and total lack of consideration for the horse see him raced to death still as a youngster. I don't know why Henry chose this subject, except maybe to highlight the difference oil started to make to everyday lives. Horses have still been raced to death in more recent years, one being Dawn Run. What seems especially wrong is that nobody can tell the horse's owner not to do it. I had Thoroughbreds, they were not raced by me but I competed them, not to the point they could not cope. Praising a fatally injured horse for trying to finish a race is not a good look.
I like the plentiful drawings in this short book. This is an unbiased review. ...more

A lioness shifter and a wolf shifter shouldn't get along - but she has been exiled from her pride and is being chased by shifters intent on harming her. He's driving a truck and feels obliged to aid a lone woman - even if she does smell like lion.
The length suits a journey or lunch time. This is clearly part of an ongoing series, but everyone is the hero of their own story. The urban fantasy is suitable for adult readers. I read a Kindle version. This is an unbiased review. ...more
