At first I just thought this was an interesting book, until I realized that it was based on true events in our American history. It amazes me how thick racism is even today, especially in the South. Ray Hinton's story is unreal, being locked up for 30 years for something he didn't do, and that was so clearly obvious, too. I am amazed and impressed with Bryan Stevenson and the tireless work he does to help people treated unfairly in the law system. He must truly be passionate about what he does and feel "called" to that work. I enjoyed looking up and watching Ray Hinton's release from prison on YouTube. I loved reading about how he helped turn a dark dungeon into a place of love and hope among scary fellow inmates, and imagining the love and support they began to spread among each other in such a lonely place. Starting a book club in there sounded epic! And I was emotional reading about how they would yell and bang on the bars when someone was about to be executed--one last feeling for that man that he wasn't alone and that people cared about him....more

Also, I don't think there are many more important topics we should be focusing on in this current generation, especially for our youth. The research on this topic is astounding. There is so much evidence to show the physical and mental harm being caused by phone use, especially social media/gaming/pornography. And all of this harm to our children is preventable! Besides the data, I feel like we can also see a "light gone out" in many kids these days who are addicted to their phones. It worries me to think about the character traits being created (or NOT being created) in our kids who grow up with a "phone-based childhood." These will be our future doctors, lawyers, teachers, presidents... I hope that lots of people read this book or discover the research so we can make some positive changes in our lifestyles. Because change will only happen if everyone is on the same page....more
