It’s difficult for a book to be both uplifting and terribly tragic, but this one achieves it. It was hard to read about Junior’s family life and culture and acknowledge the very real privileges I have because of my own (white) culture. Seeing Junior rise above his roots while being forced to leave them behind was bittersweet. I would highly recommend this book as an emotional rollercoaster you’re not likely to experience elsewhere. ...more

There’s no real plot, the romance is super cliche, and how does no one in this world know what an anxiety attack is? It’s not like they’re uncommon! I googled the author because the characterizations are like something out of a teenager’s fanfiction, and I was shocked to find they’re a grown adult with college degrees. Bummed to say it, but I don’t see any payoff for finishing this one. ...more
