1. i didn’t realize one of the main characters was literally a real person and member of the franklin expedition, which made this whole thing just feel like author insert real person fan fiction.
2. for like 80% of the book, this is just a fish out of water comedy of victorian naval officer adjusting the 21st century. these are honestly the only scenes that i actually liked. despite my hesitance of this being a real person from the franklin expedition, seeing him learn about what happened to the expedition and who actually discovered the northwest passage was compelling! but then as if this character who just happens to love spy novels literally falls into a time travel spy novel plot for the last 20%. i don’t hate that in theory, but the balance here is just off.
3. the romance just did not work for me. the power dynamics of the main character being the person introducing him to modern life, monitoring him, keeping secrets about tracking devices was just never going to work for me. plus, we just have her like lusting after him and very little indication of interest on his side until like 70% into the book.
4. if you’re going to write a book with a character from the franklin expedition, i need you to not include plot points from the tv show the terror as if they are historical facts (i’m so baffled about the fact we include the graham gore shooting an Inuit plot for no reason other than a brief mention of gore than comparing the looks of that inuit to the main character later? especially when i’m fairly certain we have no reason to believe this actually happened and is literally just something that happens in the tv show / novel the show is based on)....more

i once again loved an ali hazelwood book and am once again removing a whole star for just like work related things that pulled me out of the story (they have sex in not only the campus library but also many other public buildings on campus, which is just never going to work for me personally). ...more
