It’s been a long time since I was able to immersively read a non fantasy and non romance book. Everything about this book was compelling. Loved the puzzle, loved the characters, pulled in by the plot. One of my top reads this year. ...more

I’ve been thinking about why - it’s really fairly traditional as far as structure and world building. Magic kids in a magic school (that wants to kill them), in a world where the magic structure/culture is built around surviving and having enough power to keep surviving. With an incredibly powerful protagonist. But the rub is - she’s not a savior or the chosen one. She runs a nearly perfect line between jaded sarcasm and logical practicality and militant goodness (yet without trying to soap box that goodness into other people.) Cursed/blessed with a good souled mother. She’s fantastic and totally the reason why I keep coming back to this book. Aside from decent writing and world building and the deliciousness that is a magically powerful protagonist.
I really have to read more of Novik’s books. After I’m done listening to this one for the third time....more

However, it is a story that explores loneliness and leaving an impression on the world. When everyone forgets you how do you live? How do you keep going? How do you live a satisfying even beautiful life when you live as a ghost. In this case, the answer is art and beauty and wonderment and a good dose of iron stubbornness.
I honestly don’t care that the book is too long and the prose too purple and the characters a wee bit bland (except for Addie). I love the questions it asks and the answers given. I hope that I can live my life in the spirit of Addie LaRue. ...more

Really not sure about the world building in this book. Enjoyed the characters. Not enough lesbians in space - kind of just the one lesbian with little to no action. Unless I missed something? Poignant ending even though I kind of saw it coming once certain things were revealed.
Anywho - reading again soon in the future. Hopefully I’ll understand more now that I’ve completed it. Will definitely read the second book. ...more
