while it's always satisfying to see bad people what they deserve. I'm not sure it was worth all that abuse and trauma. The trigger warnings for rape, misogyny, domestic abuse, suicidal ideation, abortion and miscarriage really werent emphasized enough, and the amount of time dedicated in the book to elaborating on all those triggers happening to GENERATIONS of women in the Weyward family is highly disproportionate to the tiny bit of witchy magical realism and retribution that the bad men receive at the end. I have a very high tolerance of f-d up sh*t, but this one was REALLY depressing- I think because it hinges too much on the reality of what witch hunts were like in the past and definitely very accurate portrayal of rape, abortion, miscarriage, domestic violence from the woman's perspective. The author wasn't gentle; it's not uplifting at all; the women only get a half-ass vindication. Because Hart is trying to use witchy magic as the thread that ties the women together, the way the story resolves itself basically implies only magic can undo the evil of misogyny. and just...nope. ...more
