At first I wasn't feeling this book. For one, I always get frustrated reading slave stories (I don't read book so I can be frustrated). Beyond this, the main reason I wasn't getting attached to the book is that when an author uses the awkward first-person-present narrative it usually pulls me out of the story. But, as I dredged through the book, it became more and more interesting and I found the character motives more compelling. Granted there are still flaws and irritation with the narrative (also the many deus ex machinas used).
