Purrfect Magic was a cute fast read/listen. I enjoyed the audio narration, the voices and pacing were great. The story, was more so-s0. The ending kind of rushed and the reasons for the big bad weren't really fleshed out. There could have been a lot more there to develop a good villain. Our main character is kind of entitled already and why she was picked by the cats as the protector, I am unsure. But the cats I liked, a lot. They were cute and silly as cats should be, and have some amazing abilities. Overall a 3 star quick enjoyable book if you're not looking for anything too serious and just want a fun urban fantasy adventure. I love the genre because it is action-packed, full of interesting worlds and characters, and is typically a quick read. I like short fun books. Lately that's all the effort I can put into reading, so I love a great romp through magical worlds.
Urban Witch is the first I read from this author, and I'm already a fan. It was short (the audiobook was just under 7 hours) and built up just enough interest in this world for me that I might be adding the rest of the series to my endless TBR list. Thank you Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ for keeping track for me.
I liked the heroine Marnie right away. She's spunky, and super into independence. I like a strong female lead. Unfortunately, she's a witch. And in her world, she is promised to Callan as an arranged marriage, and she has to do what she's told. Ew.Â
She tries to get out, she does. She even makes a deal to finally get the chance to leave once she does the ceremony accepts her powers. But that was too good of an offer to be true - and most likely a set up from her mom. She turns out to be one powerful and off-the-charts witch. These kind of powers are unheard of in their world. So, well, oops, you can't leave now lady sorry. Now she has to learn to master her abilities because she's kind of a scary thing.
So her fiance becomes her mentor, and there are definitely sparks between them. Yet, due to the forced arrangement, she pushes him away. Marnie is so stubborn about the whole not having control of her life thing. There are some smexy moments between them despite Marnie's reluctance to accept her feelings. Callan is pretty much a sweet guy wanting this girl he's really into and agreed to marry, to be into him. And as her mentor/teacher, he goes above and beyond in protecting her from herself.
They discover just how powerful she is, what she's capable of with zero training. She gets herself in a hell of a bind to save a friend, but the potential of her being something amazing cannot be denied.Â
The book is a great start to a series but also short. I would have liked a bit more explanation into the magical world, into their customs, some more background of the relationships between characters. But I feel this will come in future books as we continue to get a taste of the world.
The audio was great! It was my first audio narrated by Elle Sonali and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'll have to look up some other books she narrated.Â

Also, the first book club meeting I attended in FOREVER so super stoked about that. The book itself, it was pretty good. It felt more like a YA in adult clothes, as our main character awoke her fae side while on a case in London. Turns out she's something kind of cool and unique, and a little bit hated in the fae world. And she's intuitive and smart, so it doesn't take her forever to come to terms with her creature-ism. She rolls with it and keeps going, getting in tons of trouble, having friends (male friends of course come to her rescue) but she is tough and fights for herself. The world building was quick, too quick for a fae novel. You get there are types of fae magic, but fae usually is a very intricate and developed culture. Here, we get just a glimpse, but this is likely because most of the story unfolds in the human realm, with fae characters. Overall a good read, fast-paced and exciting. Great audio narration. 4 stars....more

The Fae and the Fallen is the first installment in the Gifted Fae Academy. We are introduced to interesting characters, and the world-building of the fae and the un-gifted is quite interesting. I liked both our narrators and definitely want to know what happens to them. The majority of the book was high school drama, does he or does he not like me, etc. It took most of the book and didn't move the plot forward much. The book ends in a curious bombshell reveal, and I want to see how our lady lead gets to and through to the dude. The audio was great, I loved the narrators and the voices. I would definitely listen to both of them again. Overall a 3.5 read....more

I get that this is the first book and is trying to establish the world, but I wanted more depth of character. I did like the unique creature type, the Gypsy like magical people are interesting. But our main character Mirella was annoying and too busy drooling over boys around her to focus on what's happening to her. That trope in fantasy is overdone. Also overdone? The trope of the parent who binds and hides her child's magic and lies to her for her entire life so far, and continues to lie and keep secrets even after the magic secret is out. I did really find the ending intriguing, with the ritual and unveiling of the Heart Maiden (not even really a spoiler, because duh) and I'm curious to see how Mirella's magic grows as she matures into a strong woman (which, if she doesn't become a strong woman rather than a flighty annoying girl we're done). I did really enjoy the audio narration. The narrator did a great job with voices and was pleasant to listen to. ...more

I'm a fan of sassy reapers. This series kind of gave me nostalgia for another beloved reaper series, so I'm definitely happy I got to give this a listen. Ellie is a reaper now because someone murdered her and recruited her for the Reaper Collective, but she doesn't know what happened. As she tries to do her reaper job, she keeps coming across strange things, souls acting strangely and glitching out, and she keeps searching for her answers. And she finds them, alright. Finds out that she was destined for so much more than she thought. Finds out who took her life and put her in this world. I'm very curious to find out all she is capable of.
The story is short and fun, so it doesn't require a huge time investment with our busy crazy life. But it's just enough to give you a fun taste, a little escape to a new story. I did want it to be a bit longer, to have more time to develop the characters and their quirks. But it feels like the series will progress with more of that. This is just the beginning.
The audiobook narration was wonderful. A great voice, pacing, and performance by Stephanie Nemeth-Parker. She brings the characters to life with her voices and portrayal and is very pleasant to listen to. I'm going to have to look up more audiobooks narrated by her....more

The Not So Dead is about a "not so dead" teenager, going through the angsty transition to not being quite human anymore. In fact, she is a wraith and is living with her new wraith family. If you're wondering what a wraith is, it's a being that feeds off human's, but not their blood - their essence. It is a lot like the Succubus in Lost Girl, feeding off people's Chi.
I enjoyed this being the book creature since I haven't read a story about wraiths before. And I like unique creatures!
The main plot follows Faye, who is just a gamer teen and who just wants to be a regular gamer teen. She meets this human and is really into him. This human, Carter, is on his own mission. He is searching to uncover what kind of creature killed his parents. This creature with red eyes. And wraiths have red eyes.
There's some interesting plot development, introducing a creature hunter, of a sort. And an interesting tool/weapon/artifact that can be used to hurt these creatures of darkness.
The book was short, a fun taste of a paranormal story. I would have enjoyed more character development and a lot more detail about the artifact. But I feel this is to going to build on in further books in the series. The romance between our main characters could definitely use more development. It was a bit funny that a secondary character even commented something like "oh you've kissed and now you're in love."
The audio narration was good, lots of different voices being done by the narrator. Some of the voices I liked more than others, but overall it was enjoyable.
Overall a quick, fun paranormal story. 3.5 stars....more

It started off kick-assGirl, Serpent, Thorn This is a story about a girl coming to terms with who she is and going through her coming of age journey. It started off kick-ass, with her being made of poison, able to kill with a touch. But she was locked away, forgotten, hidden. So she rebels, of course, as soon as the first guy pays her attention and wants her. But he’s not what he seemed, and she ends up doing something she spent the rest of the story regretting. The villain was interesting, not totally evil at all times, I like depth to my villains. The secondary love story was a very slow burn, but fitting. And F/F. This book had some interesting worldbuilding due to the Persian fairy tale background, but it was delivered piecemeal...more

Dahlia Nite is a kick-ass dragon shifter assassin. But one day her empathic abilities awaken, keeping her from being able to complete a job. Failure in her duties is inexcusable; Dahlia is slated for execution and ends up in exile. She spends her exile living among the humans, working as a liaison to the police department and covering up crimes committed by things that go bump in the night.
I liked Dahlia, she's strong, brave, and no-nonsense. She doesn't waste time or feelings, despite being an empath, and fights to get the job done and to protect the humans around her. As a character with a broken past, she's got the toughest will. But unfortunately, her past catches up with her and we learn about the horrors as the plot unfolds.
Plot-wise, the book was gritty and dark. Very dark, very horrific. The lead villain was atrocious; not redeemable despite the villain's experiences that most definitely contributed to the raging hate and destruction. The plot was definitely not a fun urban fantasy romp: you won't find a happy romantic subplot. This book is all Tragedy and action all the time. There's definitely a satisfying end to the horrific character, but not everyone gets what they deserve.
I did enjoy the world-building and dragon/shifter/lyrriken creatures. I enjoy creatures, the more unique the better.
The audio narration was great! Great voices and tone. Cassandra King shows a range of abilities in portraying the different characters and their motivations. She depicts the creepy psycho, mean dragon queen, and jaded detectives quite well.

You can read my review of Flash Point, the first book. My opinion of the badassery of the heroine has not changed. So there's no need to go into detail about her past and her character. I like that she's more open with her partner and is actually making friends. Though, losing some too in this world. I also can't talk about the world-building much, since that was done in book one. But we get into even more of the gritty world of the Dragon Elders.Â
The plot of this one follows suit with the first book - dark, epic, gritty, and cringe-worthy. The special abilities given to the Dragon Shifters with this new drug are amazing, but what they do to the poor humans, is painful to listen to. Also, once the dark plans are revealed, you know not to expect many happy endings in this world.Â
The narration was great, again. I enjoy the voices and pacing and would continue to listen to this narrator in other books as well....more

While I generally liked the book, I was more frustrated that the pace was slow and most of the book was hanging out or partying, and not dealing with the actual situations. Evika's duties as Soldier of Light were completely glossed over. I would have liked to see some scenes showing us more of her actual job. The romance between Evika and Hayden and ultimately leading to Hayden's decision was enjoyable, but the bigger issues at play introduced only briefly were frustrating. But I'm definitely curious to see how it all plays out, especially the plotline with Alysto. I did enjoy the audio narration. The pacing and voices were great.
