In this short retelling of Alice in Wonderland, we see Alice as the Red Queen, and not only that. There is in fact a killer on the loose. Once their identity is discovered, Alice has a choice to make. Execute them or use them to her advantage?
My thoughts
I don't know guys, I expected more of this book. Mostly because it presents some unique ideas, such as Alice being the villian and not only that, but her being responsible for who falls into Wonderland, as well as being in a romantic relationship with a woman.
But despite all of the original ideas, the author didn't manage to capture the whimsical spirit of the original. Plus, the characterisation of the characters is way off. For example, how did Alice become the new queen? What has she done to make everyone afraid of her and call her mad? Because throughout the story, we don't actually see her being a tyrant, we are only told that she is.
And the main character Beatrice (view spoiler)[aka the killer who runs free in Wonderland (hide spoiler)] failed to impress me despite having an origin story I didn't expect to see. I also didn't really expect to see her being in a relationship with Alice. Which by its very nature isn't a problem, but I don't really understand why Beatrice loves her. Their relationship starts with Alice literally telling Beatrice to please her, and that if she denies it, she has other servants who are willing to do so. And from then on, Beatrice is willing to do everything for her queen. Yeah, sure, whatever...
I also didn't quite get the side plot with them seducing a knight(???) and at what point in the story they murdered the king. Unfortunately, the timeline isn't very clear, especially during these parts.
Anway, generally speaking, I didn't really enjoy this, but I am giving it some extra points for originality. It is quite sad tho to realise that a story with such unique elements, is actually somewhat forgetable...

This, unfortunately, was a big miss for me.
As a person who is passionate about speaking against the issues O' Brien tackles with his collection, I expected more from this. But in my opinion, this failed in all the ways it was supposed to succeed.
First of all, I didn't really get most of the horror and pop references that were used in this. So the bigger parts of the poems fell completelly flat for me.
And secondly, I didn't enjoy or sometimes even get the writing and the metaphors. I know how most people say that poetry is something deep and how it is supposed to make you feel things etc etc, but I am just gonna say that, at some point, we have to move on past the "poetry is putting pretty words one after another" way of thinking. Because it is both pretentious and leads to poems that do not make any sense.
If you want to read poetry that tackles things such as racism, homophobia, sexism etc, that also uses pop references, may I suggest Dear Azula, I have a crush on Danny Phantom and Turning to wallpaper which, despite themselves not being perfect, landed the mark better than this one.

Initially, I believed that this would be something like The Song Of Achilles but for Paris and his own male lover, but it's not that simple. Because at first, we are lead to believe that Ilion is a male lover, but turns out to not always be the case
Sometimes Ilion is a man, sometimes it's a woman, and sometimes it's the personification of Troy itself (which, for those who don't know, is the case in the original. Ilion is another name for Troy, and where the word Iliad comes from.)
I can't say I understood what happens in the rest of the story though. I believe I got the final part where Helen is some kind of general (cool concept, would like to see more of it in a better story) but I didn't really get anything else.
Like, for example, how is Paris bringing the destruction of Troy, if he gives the apple to Ilion, and Ilion is the city itself or a lover of his?
Yeah, the story is a bit too chaotic and doesn't leave enough clues for the reader to piece together. I believe the author intended for its message to be somewhat symbolic and not too "out there" but still, the story fell flat for me.

So, this is a graphic novel, that follows a young Merlin (the well known magician from Camelot related lore) a man who's an ex "gang" member and a youSo, this is a graphic novel, that follows a young Merlin (the well known magician from Camelot related lore) a man who's an ex "gang" member and a young girl (who, if my memory serves right, is a shapeshifter).
I came across this one completely at random, while searching for a quick read. And this one, having Merlin's name on the title, immediately caught my attention.
But, while it presented some decent ideas, the execution fell completely flat.
I didn't really like the artwork (which, if you have been following my reviews even for a while, you'll know that artwork is a big deal to me, when it comes to illustrated books) and the story isn't anything to write home about.
I would keep on going on with my review and with the issues I had with this, but one of its traits, is also that it is entirely forgettable. So much so, that I cannot remember a whole bunch of details, even though it has been like 2 or 3 months since I read it, so I am kinda forced to cut my review short. And that's definitely a flaw in my book.

Θα ξεκινήσω την κριτική με αυτό το disclaimer: Η μόνη μου επαφή με την Betty Boop, είναι μέσα από δίλεπτα κλιπάκια που μού πέταγε καμιά φορά το YouTubΘα ξεκινήσω την κριτική με αυτό το disclaimer: Η μόνη μου επαφή με την Betty Boop, είναι μέσα από δίλεπτα κλιπάκια που μού πέταγε καμιά φορά το YouTube. Είχα επίσης δει εικόνες της σε αφιερώματα για παλιά καρτούν, οπότε γενικά, γνώριζα ότι υπήρχε, αλλά μέχρι εκεί.
Το συγκεκριμένο κόμικ (σε μορφή e-book) έπεσε τυχαία στα χέρια μου, σε φάση που έψαχνα κάτι μικρό και γρήγορο για να διαβάσω, και δεν ήθελα εκείνη την ώρα, να συνεχίσω τη σειρά με την Poison Ivy που διαβάζω παράλληλα. Κάτι αυτό, κάτι που θεωρώ ότι τα παλιά καρτούν έχουν τη φάση τους και μού άρεσαν τα κλιπάκια που είχα δει στο YouTube, σκέφτηκα "γιατί όχι;"
Ε και το διάβασα.
Η αλήθεια είναι πως σίγουρα έχω διαβάσει χειρότερα βιβλία (και κόμικ πιο συγκεκριμένα) κι αυτό δεν φτάνει αυτό το βόθρο. Όμως, στον αντίποδα, είναι εντελώς βαρετό και αδιάφορο.
Το στόρυ δεν έχει πολλά να δώσει δυστυχώς και νομίζω πως αυτό είναι το βασικότερο πρόβλημα του βιβλίου αυτού. Το ίδιο και το art style, ακόμα κι αν μιμείται το στυλ του ορίτζιναλ καρτούν. Θεωρώ ότι ίσως αυτό, να δούλευε αν ήταν ένα ολιγόλεπτο επεισόδιο στην τηλεόραση. Σε γραπτή όμως μορφή - τουλάχιστον για εμένα - δεν δούλεψε. Πρόκειται σίγουρα για αυτό που λέμε, ένα "φλατ" πράγμα, κάτι που σίγουρα θα έχω ξεχάσει ότι το διάβασα, μέχρι το καλοκαίρι.
Και ναι, καταλαβαίνω ότι σε πολύ κόσμο που έχει νοσταλγία συνδεδεμένη με τη Betty Boop, άρεσε. Εγώ όμως, δεν ανήκω σε αυτή την κατηγορία. Όμως, ένα βιβλίο, ή μια σειρά, μια ταινία κλπ, δεν θα έπρεπε να υπολογίζει στη νοσταλγία του κοινού, και να παίρνει τα θετικά λόγια ως δεδομένα, ρίχνοντας ενίοτε (κι ενδεχομένως) την ποιότητα του εκάστοτε προϊόντος. Αλλά θα μού πείτε, τι ξέρω εγώ;

Λοιπόν, αυτό που με τράβηξε από την αρχή σε αυτό το βιβλίο, ήταν ο τίτλος του και κάπως έτσι, μού γέννησε την περιέργεια να το διαβάσω, καθώς κι εγώ όΛοιπόν, αυτό που με τράβηξε από την αρχή σε αυτό το βιβλίο, ήταν ο τίτλος του και κάπως έτσι, μού γέννησε την περιέργεια να το διαβάσω, καθώς κι εγώ όπως και πολλοί άλλοι άνθρωποι, συναναστρέφομαι καθημερινά με - να μην το πω ηλίθιους - να το πω: ανθρώπους που τους λείπει η κοινή λογική. Και ήθελα να δω τι σχετικό θα μπορούσε να μού πει αυτό το μικρό δοκίμιο.
Το συμπέρασμα ήταν πως δεν είχε να μού πει τίποτα το ουσιαστικό που δεν γνώριζα ήδη. Και σίγουρα δεν είχε να μού πει κάτι που να δικαιολογεί αυτό το πομπώδες ύφος, τα διαγράμματα και την έκταση του βιβλίου, καθώς έχω δει - όπως έγραψα και στις σημειώσεις που θα βρείτε κάτω από την κριτική - απλά memes που είναι πιο εύστοχα.
Και γενικά, μού έκανε εντύπωση πόσο πολύ αρέσει αυτό το βιβλίο, με την λογική, ότι παραξενεύτηκα που είδα πολύ κόσμο ότι "χρειαζόταν" κάποιον για να του πει πράγματα που, προσωπικά, θεωρώ αυτονόητα.
Για παραπάνω σχόλια σχετικά με αυτό το βιβλίο, σας παραθέτω δύο πολύ εύστοχες κριτικές που βρήκα και συμφωνώ μαζί τους απόλυτα.
Πραγματικά, δεν ξέρω τι κριτική να γράψω για αυτό εδώ το βιβλίο. Κι όχι γιατί είναι αριστούργημα και δεν βρίσκω λόγια να το περιγράψω.

Τρίτη μου απόπειρα να διαβάσω ένα από τα τεύχη της σειράς "Κλασσικά Εικονογραφημένα" παρότι, οι δύο προηγούμενές μου απόπειρες, αποδείχθηκαν τραγικές,Τρίτη μου απόπειρα να διαβάσω ένα από τα τεύχη της σειράς "Κλασσικά Εικονογραφημένα" παρότι, οι δύο προηγούμενές μου απόπειρες, αποδείχθηκαν τραγικές, με εμένα να βαθμολογώ και τα δύο εκείνα τεύχη με 1/5. Αλλά σκέφτηκα "Κάτσε μήπως αυτό εδώ δεν είναι τόσο κακό." Κι ομολογώ πως το συγκεκριμένο δεν ήταν τόσο κακό. Αλλά δεν ήταν κι ακριβώς καλό.
Θεωρώ πως το συγκεκριμένο, το έπαιρνε να είναι και λίγο μεγαλύτερο, για να δείξει καλύτερα την όλη ιστορία της Ιωάννας, αλλά και να αναδείξει τους χαρακτήρες. Γιατί ακόμα και η Ιωάννα, καταλήγει να είναι κομπάρσα στην ίδια της την ιστορία, με 9 από τις 10 ατάκες της να είναι κάτι του τύπου: "Οι φωνές μου λένε αυτό" , "Οι φωνές μου λένε εκείνο" , "Δεν επικοινώνησαν σήμερα οι φωνές μου" ε, και όσο να 'ναι, το να σηκωθείς από το χωριό σου και να διοικήσεις ολόκληρο στρατό, δείχνει πως είσαι κάτι παραπάνω από αυτό.
Κάτι που παρατήρησα ότι είναι κοινό και σε αυτό εδώ αλλά και στα άλλα δύο τεύχη που έχω διαβάσει, είναι ότι οι διάλογοι πάσχουν (όπως και το character work, που το ανέφερα και πιο πάνω) αλλά και το pacing της ιστορίας, καθώς υπάρχουν αρκετά time jumps που σε κάνουν να νομίζεις ότι όλα αυτά τα γεγονότα, έλαβαν χώρα μέσα σε 4 μήνες.
Ακόμα, παρατήρησα πως πέφτει στην κλασσική παγίδα του να μας πει/ανακοινώσει πως οι χαρακτήρες κάνουν/θα κάνουν κάποια πράγματα, αντί να μας τους δείχνει να τα κάνουν. Το σημείο όπου αυτό φαίνεται πιο έντονα, είναι εκεί που η Ιωάννα πρόκειται να πάρει χάρη/ελαφρότερη ποινή καθώς απολογήθηκε, αλλά άνθρωποι που δεν θέλουν να τη δουν να αθωώνεται, λένε ότι θα μπουν στο κελί της, θα της κλέψουν τα γυναικεία ρούχα που είχε μαζί της, αναγκάζοντάς την έτσι να φορέσει τα αντρικά που εκείνοι θα είχαν αφήσει, οδηγώντας την έτσι τελικά στην πυρά. Η επόμενη σκηνή, είναι η εκτέλεση της Ιωάννας, από εκεί που μόλις μια σελίδα πριν, είχε λάβει χάρη.
Δεν ξέρω κι εγώ τι διαφορετικό περίμενα από αυτό εδώ, καθώς δεν είναι ένα αναλυτικό non fiction βιβλίο για την Ιωάννα της Λωραίνης, αλλά ένα μικρό τεύχος κόμικ που πρόθεσή του είναι να εισάγει τους νεαρότερους αναγνώστες στην ιστορία της. Νομίζω ότι περίμενα απλά να είναι καλύτερο και να μού αρέσει περισσότερο. Σίγουρα δεν με έκανε να νιώσω το ίδιο κριντζ και το ίδιο μπέρδεμα που με είχαν κάνει να νιώσω τα άλλα δυο τεύχη που διάβασα, αλλά δεν είναι και αυτό το καταπληκτικό κόμικ που με έκανε να περάσω καλά και θα το θυμάμαι για πολύ καιρό ακόμα.

Imagine my disappointment when I discovered that this was all this part of the series was about. I mean, overall this isn't some great story, but please, give us something.
I gave it a little extra more, because of the artwork, which is once again, phenomenal, but that's pretty much its only redeeming quality....more

The events this book describes, have been depicted on a tapestry that was contemporary to the actual history and the book itself begins with a little piece about that. We see many of the people who participated in those events, such as Edward the confessor, Harold II and of course, William himself.
On paper, this had so many things that I like! It's a short story, and an illustrated one at that, and it is history related. But I am sad to say that I was actually tempted to DNF it.
Now, I won't say that I am totally unfamiliar with the events that the book is about, but I also can't claim that I am very familiar with them, to the extent that I can criticize this based on historical accuracy. But don't worry, there are other stuff I can criticize it for.
First of all, the pacing. Because everything felt like it happened within the span of like a week. Which is absolutely not the case. And I also have to admit that I got confused when it came to the characters' motives. Like, okay, they basically did what they did for the crown, but while reading the dialogue, I was under the impression that they had masterminded many plans - which fair enough, they probably had in real life - and those were not depicted the right way. So the whole "planning" fell flat for me, instead of building up tension. To me, the whole story feels incomplete and disjointed.
There were also some characters which I couldn't tell what purpose they were serving. Like that Conan guy who was causing so many problems and we saw him for like one or two panels and then we never see him again. Or like that woman who seduces one of the guys (which guys she seduces and whose side this guy is on, will remain a mystery to me, because I didn't quite catch that) and then she is suspected to be a traitor and is shot with an arrow. They had no impact on the overall story. And as an expansion of that, I also couldn't feel the connection between the characters. For example, William adores his wife, we see them having sex once. And? I don't buy into that, sorry.
So as you can tell, my main complains have to do with it being way underdeveloped and dull. I read a lot of people's reviews where they were complaining about the art too. Well, the art isn't the best I've seen in a comic and a few panels definitely feel unfinished/rushed, but it's also not the worst artwork I've seen, except perhaps that some of the characters look alike and that can be hella confusing.
By the way, someone really needs to fix the online synopsis of this, because Harold wasn't Edward's son, but his brother in law, I said so in my notes too.
Anyway, this surely was a let down for me, because I love history and it's so sad when I read stuff that are based on historical events but they don't do them justice (go on, ask me about what other books that fall into that category I've read) and for me to consider DNFing a graphic novel, which is under 100 pages mind you, is a first!
I'd rather watch a YouTube documentary about William's invasion, or better yet, a Horrible Histories episode. I bet there must be one!

I actually found this on an online comics site, where it was presented as a standalone. So I had no idea that this wasn't a fully developed story, butI actually found this on an online comics site, where it was presented as a standalone. So I had no idea that this wasn't a fully developed story, but that it was supposed to be a comic book adaptation of Bram Stoker's "Dracula's Guest" (which was originally supposed to be Dracula's second chapter.)
So that, in combination with the change of the title (why not keep the original title?) made me think that I would read something else than I ended up reading.
I originally thought that I'd read some story inspired by Dracula or something. So imagine my surprise when the comic book ended around page 15? 20? Without any real closure and plot having happened.
It wasn't a bad comic per se, but it was like reading the ripped up pages of someone's book, and they left much to be desired!
I found out that the same people who are behind this, have also done a comic book adaptation of the actual Dracula book, so I may check that one out, and let's hope that I'll enjoy it.

Συν ότι περιγράφει όλα τα γεγονότα που συνέβησαν και τους ανθρώπους που συμμετείχαν σε αυτά με πολύ ειδυλλιακό τρόπο, πράγμα που με κάνει να αναρωτιέμαι κατά πόσο είναι ακριβές.
Ίσως είναι καλό σαν εισαγωγή των παιδιών για το πώς δημιουργήθηκε το πρώτο Σύνταγμα της Ελλάδας, αλλά σίγουρα δεν θα έπρεπε να παραμείνει ως η μόνη τους πηγή πληροφοριών πάνω στο θέμα.
Το μόνο για το οποίο νομίζω ότι δεν έχω μιλήσει, είναι η εικονογράφηση, αλλά δεν έχω παράπονα, τη βρίσκω αρκετά συμπαθητική.
Τελικά, όσο αφορά τη βαθμολογία, ίως ένα 2.75/5 ή ένα 3/5 να είναι αντιπροσωπευτικό του βιβλίου.

Κι έρχομαι εγώ, για μια ακόμη φορά, με τη μη δημοφιλή μου άποψη.
Προσωπικά, λοιπόν, διαπίστωσα ότι η συγκεκριμένη συλλογή, δεν με άγγιξε ούτε στο ελάχιστο και φλέρταρα πολύ έντονα με το ενδεχόμενο να την παρατήσω στη μέση, πράγμα που τελικά δεν έκανα.
Αναγνωρίζω φυσικά, ότι με το συγγραφέα, μας χωρίζουν βασικά πράγματα, όπως πχ η φυλή και τα βιώματά μας, και ίσως να παίζει κι αυτό το ρόλο του στο ότι δεν μού άρεσε αυτό εδώ. Ξέρετε όμως με ποιους άλλους συγγραφείς, μας χωρίζουν βασικά πράγματα; Με τους συγγραφείς των Mexican Gothic , The Vanishing Half , On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous κι άλλων πολλών. Αλλά μαντέψτε, τα βιβλία που ανέφερα - βέβαια δεν ανήκουν στο είδος της ποίησης - μού άρεσαν πολύ. Οπότε, κάπου παύει να ισχύει η καραμέλα "Δεν είσαι εσύ το κοινό στο οποίο απευθύνεται ο συγγραφέας." και εξετάζονται τα skills του δημιουργού.
Για να κλείνω λοιπόν, σιγά σιγά αυτή την κριτική, είναι εμφανές ότι δεν μιλάμε για μια θετική αναγνωστική εμπειρία. Πρόκειται για ένα βαρετό και υπερτιμημένο βιβλίο και ο μόνος λόγος που δεν του βάζω ένα στρογγυλό 1/5, είναι επειδή, παρόλη τη βαρεμάρα που με έκανε να νιώσω, δεν κατάφερε να με θυμώσει, όπως άλλα βιβλία που πήραν αυτή τη βαθμολογία.
