Tara grows up with very little access to books or media and receives no form of education. She does dangerous work with her crazy father who likes to hurt family members. Her mother is slightly better, but in the end always sides with male authority.
My mom left this area and only returned briefly for family visits. She also was eventually given the boot by the church. Her family was very supportive in this, so not like the Westover situation. On the other hand, 50s culture wasn't kind to independent women....more
