My room echoes with the screams she never uttered, and under my floor the vines of remorse get ready to push up through the damp. The cricket drips remembrance unceasingly into my ear, lest I mislay any items of cruelty's fiendish inventory.
I like books with poetic and 'flowery' prose, but I guess not this much. It's beautifully written, but I didn't really understand a lot of it and nothing seemed to be happening - or maybe I just couldn't decipher it through the metaphors. Even though this is only a short book (this edition was 150 pages), I couldn't face slogging through it for an hour and a half, and gave up after finishing part 2. Just not for me....more
DNF. I read Part 1 and despite a few areas of beautiful prose, I felt no real connection with the characters, and it felt a bit too miserable. After lDNF. I picked this up because of the gorgeous cover (I absolutely love it!) but I got about halfway through and just couldn't get into it. The setting is very evocative, but I didn't like the main character and the story just didn't hook me. Maybe I'll come back to it again another time?...more
