“But I have no faith in love. Love cannot save me. I choose vengeance
Went into this not knowing what to expect, but I had such a blast with it! The plot was interesting and I didn’t know where it was really going until that end! This was very fast paced with one thing happening after the other and I could not put it down. There’s corruption, politics, a little bit of romance, and exciting battles.
First, we have the FMC Wu Zetian who is unapologetically unhinged, unfiltered, strong af, and fueled with so much feminine rage. I loved and respected her character so much! She avenges her sister and then decides that still isn’t enough because she then wants to destroy this inherently toxic system that constantly uses women.
“You insecure men, you’re afraid. You can force us into compliance, but, deep down, you know you can’t force us to truly love and respect you. And without love and respect, there will always be a seed of hatred and resistance. Growing. Festering. Waiting.
“So many of the people inside have either put me in this position or refused to help me. Since they want me gone so badly, I’ll go. But they’re all coming with me
“It’s hilarious. Men want us so badly for our bodies, yet hate us so much for our minds.
This was my first “mecha themed book, so the world-building was very intriguing. Their world is “invaded by these mechanical alien-like creatures called Hunduns and Chrysalises (advanced and modified husks of Hunduns) are used to fight them. The Chrysalises are powered by the spirit “energies and minds of a male (the pilot) and a female (his concubine). The latter is generally drained like a “battery and often dies because of the mental toll on her. It’s a constant cycle, which is a little sad. It took me some time to absorb all the terminology and mechanics of the power systems. There are still a few things I have questions about, but it was still done well overall. The author really sets the stone ahead for all the main plot reveals.
I also adored the MMCs in this! Shimin and Yizhi are both cinnamon rolls in their own way. The former is a, um, more angry and broody version and the latter is a soft ray of sunshine...more

It was predictable for the most part because I wasn’t really surprised by the twists, but I was still hooked onto the story. The foreshadowing and the hints were obvious and pretty much gave away what I was expecting for the Ordeals.
Still, the writing itself was easy to follow and kept me reading because I was really attached to all the characters. I really liked Kiva’s character and her role as a healer was very interesting. I have a lot of respect for her, and her protectiveness towards Tipp was adorable...more
