First, the good because despite my seemingly low rating, there were things I enjoyed.
By far my favourite thing about this book was the setting - the idea of people being essentially locked down on a ship hurdling through space without much of a say in a 700 years mission really appealed to me. There were some really interesting points to the system they lived by (e.g. the Breeding System) but there were a few places where the setting could have been better explained and/or expanded on to add even more layers to the story.
Another thing I enjoyed was the writing which flipped between being really great to being a bit too cheesy for my taste. And that's purely because the main protagonist, Seren, went from being very immature in her speech to being almost lyrical in next. That being said, there were some really great passages about her life and thirst for freedom.
I think the place where this book truly suffered was the romance. I'm a sucker for romance; I'm even more of a sucker for a well written romance. This sadly was a romance that developed way too fast for my taste. Seren sees Dom once and it's lust-at-first-sight. It didn't make much sense to me though their relationship got better the more we got into the book.
I'm still unsure how I felt about the ending. Although, I feel like there is a lot of room for a second book that could expand more on the story and the characters. Overall, a quick and pleasant read that suffered from a bad case of insta-love with too little of an engaging plot besides the romance. ...more

I admit that this series sneaked up on me. The first two book were good, but they weren't brilliant (thus 4 star rating for both of them). It wasn't until Gathering Darkness that this series sunk its claws into me so deeply I was devouring every word like candy.
Frozen Tides exceeded my expectations even more than Gathering Darkness did. It was full of twists so mind bending that I was left gaping and muttering to myself as I read this. Things really start kicking off in this book and I can't wait to see what else Morgan Rhodes has in store for us with the next instalment.
There were also some new characters that were introduced in Gathering Darkness who got a bigger role in this book.
First was Amara who is one ruthless and driven girl. I honestly spent the entire book being torn between really loving her and really hating her. She has ambition and knows how to get what she wants but some of the things she does leaves a bitter taste in my mouth even though I know why she's doing it.
And perhaps the biggest surprise of this entire book: Felix. I liked Felix in the previous book, but in Frozen Tides he has managed to become one of my absolute favourite characters in this series. It was fascinating to see certain events from his point of view.
Of course it won't be a Morgan Rhodes book if someone doesn't end up dead. One death in particular really upset me because I really liked the character. I had to take a break after that chapter because I literally went, "NOPE" out-loud.
Also the ending of this book was incredible. So much happened. And that last chapter? HOW? WHAT?
(Well actually I think I have a pretty good idea about the 'how'.)
If you haven't read this series yet, or struggled with the first two books, please give Gathering Darkness a go. The slow burn of this series is completely worth it. ...more

I can completely understand why it's the fan favourite because this series finally reached its peak. The last two books were good; very enjoyable and quick reads even. But this book made this series great.
There were so many crazy twists this time around. Quite few I actually didn't see coming at all. It even had one death that actually upset me. I never really cared about character deaths in the last two book because I either saw them coming or I disliked the character. Basically I never cared. But this time I really did.
Also thank you god for the lack of instalove this time around. The last two books were bucket full of it and I'm so glad that romance in this book was more slowburn and deliciously intense. Suffice to say all my ships are slowly sailing and I couldn't be happier.
As for the characters, they've all grown on me so much. Especially Cleo. She has come a long way and I'm glad that has progressed so much. Magnus is still my bae though. I hate to love that guy (most of the time I just want to shake him) but he's by far my favourite in this series and his struggles are so fascinating to read about.
However, I hate Lucia. Three books in this series and I can say this with absolute certainty. She was always my least favourite from the quartet but I really wanted to slap her in this book. Repeatedly. Many times over. Maybe it's just me.
The ending of this book was so intense I'm planning to pick up the sequel straight away. So much stuff is going down. Ahhhhh!
This book exceeded my expectations. I just hope that the next one doesn't disappoint compared to this one. ...more

Some stories I did enjoy, but almost all of them felt a bit too forced, almost like she was pushing the uniqueness and the quirkiness. Not to mention the very dramatic final lines that all stories had.

I loved the movie and reading this novelization of it made me relive it all over again.
However since the book was based on an earlier version of the script, we still have some minor changes in the book. There are few additional scenes in the book that were not in the movie, which was a real shame because they were definitely interesting. Also some characterisations were surprisingly different as well (especially Rey and Kylo). I may actually slightly prefer book Rey over movie Rey because I personally felt more attached to her in the book, but that's just me.
This was an enjoyable read overall, and while people who have never watched the movies may find this underwhelming, it's a must read for any Star Wars fan. Especially if you enjoyed the new film as much as I did. ...more

I enjoyed this book. The comparison with Game of Thrones is pretty accurate, although you shouldn't actually expect Game of Thrones when going into this book. Because it is not. It's still a YA fantasy series and it shows.
While I wasn't exactly blown away by this, I did enjoy it more than the first Throne of Glass book (which is now one of my favourite series) so my expectations for the next book are a bit higher. A lot of people also said that they were shocked by certain character deaths (there are quite a few), but I honestly wasn't. Maybe I'm getting better at spotting these things or I'm just not as easily shocked anymore, who knows?
As far as characters go, the only character I'm even remotely invested in, is Magnus. He's by far the most complex character in the book and I'm interested to see where his character will be taken in the next three books. Other were...alright. I suppose Cleo was okay but I've heard some great things about her in the future books so I'm eager to see some brilliant character development from her.
However the real reason I lowered the rating for this was the ending. I just found it too underwhelming. It felt lacking in some sense though I can't exactly put my finger on what it was.
Besides the "okay" ending I can definitely say that I've enjoyed this book, and I already have Rebel Spring ready to go. Bring on more death! ...more
