"Reading usually calms the mind and helps me sleep, so a short should do the trick." A few minutes later, and I'm crying so hard and trying to not wake the hubby whom is sleeping beside me and have an important meeting tomorrow.
What really got me in this short, was how real it felt. I was afraid I was going to die just a few weeks ago, and reading this short brought me back to that. Conpletly different situations, but the point that the author tapped into the basic humanity of it proves it was a good one.
(Unsure what to do now, though, find another short or just try for sleep anywho?)

And, yeah, my mind was calmed down, but not because this was a nice and easy read.
While the language was good, I found the story slow, repetative, and really info-dumping. There was a lot of random backstory that didn't seem relevant to the current story, and it felt like the MC didn't know what she want to feel about anyone at any time. ''He made my hair stand on end'' but at the same time ''I wanted him to be impressed by me and proud of me''.
I know I read the whole thing, but I think I spaced out for most of it, for I honestly can't remember what it's about, even just having finished it. There was an ambush, and flashbacks, and a ''blast from the past'', but that's about it.
I guess it might have been more interesting if I'd read the original series, but as it stands, it didn't capture my interest enough for me to want to read any more in the series.

Fear and Curses is the fourth and next-to-last book in this series - if the author is to be believed. It follows the receipt of the two previous booksFear and Curses is the fourth and next-to-last book in this series - if the author is to be believed. It follows the receipt of the two previous books, of spanning over one day and including multiple ARCs that tie together in an interesting way.
One of the most prominent ARCs in this book is Lizzie's relationships. Both to her parents, her old family friends, as well as romantic relationships. Because of that, it's not as heavy on the magic and action-fronts. Although that ending! I couldn't put the book down! I will admit that I think this might be the weakest book in this series, but it's not a bad one, and I really did enjoy it.
The 3/5 star rating is in comparison with the rest of the series.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Ah! Another book with polyamorous representation! This is the kind of romance I can get behind! I'm actually looking forward to reading the rest of this ARC in the next book - and if you know me, you know I'm not really a fan of romance ARCs, I often don't care at all, so that's saying something about this one!
The other book with polyam rep I've recently read was Hers, Times Two.
Disclaimer: I consider the author a good friend, and I received and ARC. This means that the finished book may be a little different than the one I read. I will do my best to not let my relationship with the author affect my review/rating....more

Bound Into Darkness
I had so many problems with this 1, and I'm so sad about that! The editing is abhorent, both on regards to grammar, as well as build up. There were repetitions and events coming out of thin air, makimg me feel like I'd skipped a page. And while I like Eli as a character, his POV here seemed to reduce him to a vet and nothing more, which was disappointing. And it was slow

The Ties That Bind
This story was everything the other wasn't. Not only was the action intense, but the underlying plot was very interesting! It may also explain why there was so little cancer in the Everheart-sisters. I'm so hyped to learn more about this! Editing was a little spotty, tho.

My problem with the erotica genre is that there's no story, and I need more than just relationships and sex to keep me interested in a book. Thankfully, Anna's books are more than just the sex - not saying that her sex-scenes aren't hot, for they are! - but she also builds in characters and an interesting world and a story.
That said, this book wasn't quite for me. It's well written and has all the usual Adler-staples, and I loved what Liz was going through and the representation it detailed! As well as the polyam rep! But there was something that kept putting me off. I felt that the boys were a little too much in their adoration at times, there was some drama that I felt the book didn't need, and the whole Binding thing just raised my hackles, and not in a good way.
There was also a lack of story/conclusion. Other than the character ARCs, there isn't much else of a drive, even if we get hints at things. Maybe Anna plans to write a sequel where some of these things are more important? That'd make up for it for me, at least.
I feel really badly about giving this a 2-star rating, but with the rating-system that is on GR now, where 2 stars means ''it was OK'', that feels most right. But keep in mind THIS IS NOT A BAD BOOK! It just wasn't quite for me.

It wasn't bad, but it felt like it was lacking something, some kind of depth I would have had if I already knew the characters. Regarding the characters, it felt like something was off. The book is short and takes you quickly through how this author got a big mailing list, step-by-step-ish. I say ish, for some parts of it felt copy/paste to get all the info in, and I kept feeling like the author was bragging a little about his sales. All of that was fine, though, as it's part of a book such as this.
I think my biggest problem was the method. I agree that you should offer value to your mailing list, and not only push your own sales, but I feel like this would over-do it. I know that if I stumbled over an author who did all the things this book asked them to do, I'd unsubscribe and run as far away as I could. It would feel forced and, in the end, all about tricking you into buying their work.
Oh well. I did get a few ideas, tho, so that's not bad, and everything is a learning curve. The 2 star is just what GR advertice. It was OK....more

SNAFU
First read. It's a short one, but it really shows how Jane becomes the woman we all know and love! Not to mention it gives us a bit more info about her late-teen years, and how she handled Beast when she first appeared. Seems it was confusing, understandibly enough. There was fun and action and character.

THE DEVIL'S LEFT BOOT
I'm glad to get a story from Molly's witchy twin sisters, especially at this point in the series. It rounded out a lot of things I didn't realize was unifished. Although I can't remember if the events are ever mentioned, I feel like there's more of a story there. The main plot in itself didn't do anything for me, but it wasn't bad either.

I learned today how short it really was, and thought it wouldn't be a bad way to spend one of the many waking hours I have during the night, and I wasn't wrong.
The story is very short and doesn't have much of a plot, other than human hubris and hate. It was well written, thought, and it hinted at a mystery I would be interested in solving. I'm honestly considering giving the rest of the series a look.
Actual rating is 3.5/5 stars, but I'm rounding it up to 4, as a 3 didn't feel right, but a pure 4 is a bit high for something so short without an actual story. ...more

Another thing I liked, was how Armstrong played with her own genre, making it clear she doesn't take it as seriously as I've seen some other authors do.
The story was a little slow, but this whole short felt more like a character development for Nick, and in that regard it worked great. I always felt that Nick's jump in personality over the last couple books in the series was a little sudden, but this story made it more believable....more

The Kingdom of Elsewhere is a collection of speculative fiction, and for me that seemed to make it a collection fo short stories. Unfortunatly, that wasn't the case. Most of the book was a set of vignets bound together only by theme, but hardly story or characters. And while they were all well written, they didn't give me anything. I need something to hook me, something to keep me interested, and that was hard to find in this book, considering the vignets were so short they didn't have time to create a story or complete world.
That's not to say that there weren't any good or interesting vignets there, for there was! Some of the stories were interesting, and I would have loved to read a full book, or maybe just a proper short story focusing on those elements.
Unfortunatly, in the end, this book left me frustrated and wanting more, but knowing I wouldn't get it. ...more
