Derek constantly acts in a way that goes against Sara’s wishes. He invades her space full well knowing it makes her uncomfortable, touches her inappopriately in a way she doesn’t want. She even tells him to cease a few times and especially at the beginning felt threatened by him due to his size and behaviour.
After reading a few reviews and learned this was written in 1994 I’m no longer surprised. Macho alpha enraged male who shouts at the female MC for no reason and who doesn’t respect her wishes seems about right for a book written during that time. It’s definitely not something I want to read and from what I’ve gathered it gets even worse later in the book, especially during the sex scenes. Not to forget to spurned ex-lover who takes revenge. Gross.
For future Lisa Kleypas novels I’ll definitely check when they were originally written/published to avoid this drivel in the future....more

A few pages earlier the supposed male love interest McKenna told Aline he'd consider it permission to rape her if she didn't have him sent away from the manor by the next day. Meanwhile Aline is like "Oh, surely he wouldn't do that. I knew him twelve years ago, surely he's still the same person inside even if just a few pages ago I remarked a different sentiment". McKenna is depraved and sick and definitely the worst "love interest" I've ever read by Lisa Kleypas along with Derek Craven from Dreaming of You. What is it with Lisa Kleypas writing so many rape-y love interests?...more

The writing/sentence structure in this was so weird that I needed to reread sentences way too often. The events and actions by Skedi in chapters 18/19 ultimately robbed me off the little motivation I still had to read this.

Bowen has lovely prose and the cover is beautiful but this is your typical journey adventure story. The two main characters fell completely flat for me because they were very one dimensional. The strong feelings Simidele develops for the main guy a few days after meeting him gave me insta-love vibes and really put me off, especially after she‘s been told not to fall in love with a human (as it will have terrible consequences). *facepalm*
