In other words, I LOVE IT. Holy lots, I love it. I know that other people are irritated by the fact that Laurence occasionally does stupid things, but I am deeply appreciative that the hero is principled yet has the very human failing of having not so great foresight.
Like the O'Brian novels, this series is also a pretty good pastiche of early 19th-century literary styles, if not quite as densely written as O'Brian. This sort of pastiche frequently fails, but it read quite naturally here.
Recommended if you like novels about the Napoleonic Wars -- I certainly prefer these to Bernard Cornwell!...more
