Firstly, kudos to the author for thinking up the unique idea of a book within a book idea. This made the plot layered and dynamic. However, much like I am not one for instant romance, instant friendship also does not work for me. Call me rude, but I will never meet three strangers and instantly have them over everyday. For this reason I found it hard to engage with characters from the beginning.

Dense, dense and denser. That is what this book felt like to me. At almost five hundred pages, this entirely character-driven book was a slog for me. Dense, dense and denser. That is what this book felt like to me. At almost five hundred pages, this entirely character-driven book was a slog for me. I read other glowing reviews on this book and I completely appreciate that the character development is nothing short of masterful. Personally, plot-driven books are more my thing and some editing could have lessened the denseness of this book and still managed to convey the overall complexity of the story.

The main characters were interesting, cute, and quirky. The perfect summer romance.

This author left me satisfied in terms of the gorgeous writing. However, I wish the ending had left me as pleased.

However, as it stands I found this book incredibly confusing. As a lover of truce crime, this book felt far too fictionalized. The author took a lot of liberties when it came to speculating how the killer and victims felt. Therefore, this read much more like fiction than non-fiction. What I enjoy about true crime are the facts and details and less the feelings, so this did not work for me.
Frankly, I also did not care about the dueling authors that were so heavily focused on. I could have lived without any of their narratives.

The friendship seemed off, but I couldn’t put my finger on what was going on. However, I am glad I stuck it out because the author was building layers and character dynamics, all of which led to a crazy culmination.
This is a slow burn thriller. One you need to invest in but will be rewarded in time.

The characters are dynamic and throughout the book struggle with their own mental health and personal development. Call me a prude but I didn't really care for the internal dialogue from Walker, his sexual innuendos were cringe in my opinion. Additionally, the staging for some of the sexy scenes was kind of weird (frankly I just don't find bingo all that sexy).

My only issue was that I found the narrative repetitive but this was likely a result of the mothers MO always being the same. Also, I don’t believe the diary entries that were included added anything to the overall story.

I thoroughly enjoyed the second book in what is going to be a fantastic trilogy. Luckily, this book did not fall prey to the second book slump, which I thoroughly enjoyed the second book in what is going to be a fantastic trilogy. Luckily, this book did not fall prey to the second book slump, which is common in these fantastical epics.
The author continued to maintain the pace and the intrigue of the first book. Still offering many plot twists and story development. The only thing I did not care for was the new romance that was introduced in this installment. It did not feel necessary and somewhat forced.
