Frances always lets her daughter know her feelings on the subject. Then, the unthinkable happens. Frances stumbles over a dead body herself and gets caught up in a possible murder investigation.
Not only does Frances want to find a killer, but she wants to keep her part of it a secret. There’s no way she can admit to Ellison that she found a body too.
I love this series, but I’m way behind on it. I have only read the first two books and, luckily for me, this is set right between them.
It’s a humorous look at murder investigations through Frances Walford’s eyes. Only the Good Die Young is a novella and a quick read. Perfect for an afternoon break. This book brightened up my day. It already has me wanting to get back to reading this series. I have them on my TBR and need to catch up.
Julie Mulhern never fails to disappoint me with her writing. She always leaves me wanting to read more. My only complaint is there aren't any others from Frances' POV or at least I haven't seen any. I'll have to look for them....more

When a dying teeTrouble always seems to land on Ellison Russell’s doorstep. She is always in the wrong place, at the wrong time. Just ask her mother. When a dying teenager asks her to tell his girlfriend he loves her, she’s on a mission to find out who the girl is and to give the message to her. It’s not as easy as it might sound.
I love Ellison. She’s a very realistic character…she’s dealing with a rebellious teenage daughter and an overbearing mother. To make matters worse, she lives a “high society type life and has to deal with the gossipy country club crowd. Unfortunately for Ellison, she never seems to be able to please anyone, especially her mother and daughter.
Ellison isn’t one of those amateur sleuths who sticks her nose into a murder investigation just because she feels like it. In fact, she’s not investigating the murder at all. She simply wants to give Bobby Lowell’s girlfriend his dying message. The odd thing is, nobody seems to know he was dating anyone, let alone being in love.
The search leads Ellison is a few dangerous directions, but that only makes her determination stronger.
This is the second book in the series and I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the first. The 70’s setting is one that interests me, probably because I grew up in it. It’s kind of humorous to go back to a world without cellphones and social media. How quickly we forget :)
Besides being a cozy mystery, this has a taste of chick lit too. Ellison is continually paired up with awful blind dates and gets herself into some wacky situations. She's a single mother trying to live her life, but outside circumstances are always getting in the way. Namely, murders!
The storyline flows beautifully. The characters are well-developed and complex. They literally come to life on each page. This series is a winner and I’m looking forward to the next Ellison adventure.

She swims right into the dead body of her husband’s mistress. Naturally she becomes the prime suspect in the murder. However, Ellison couldn’t care less about her husband’s mistress. She knows all about her husband’s cheating ways, kinky sex and blackmail schemes. In fact, she doesn’t even want to be married to the guy any longer. Killing his mistress would serve no good purpose for her, but the police aren’t buying it.
Her overbearing mother has a few things to say as well. She's more interested in Ellison keeping up appearances and meeting a nice guy to settle down with. Meanwhile, Ellison spends her time trying to please her mother while taking care of her teenage daughter and dealing with her husband’s nastiness.
When other dead bodies start showing up everywhere Ellison goes, she looks more and more guilty each day. She’s determined to find the killer on her own and prove her innocence.
The Deep End takes place in the year 1974 in Missouri. It's a unique take on the cozy genre. I found the setting to be intriguing and the characters to be well-developed. Some were quite unconventional. The mystery takes a few twists and turns along the way and keeps your interest until the end. I was very surprised at how it all wrapped up. It’s a captivating novel and I’m looking forward to reading more by this author.
