The more I read the less it held my interest. I usually like books about the 1800's, but this didn't do it for me. The characters were okay and of course the hardships they went through were sometimes unimaginable, Axie of course was a strong child/woman through out the book and certainly made something of her life. I give it 2 1/2 stars. This didn't touch me like most history stories, maybe it was hard stuff to believe even though I know some of this is true....more

The story line about the foster care system has good and bad. The main character Victoria lived a life most of us would not want to live, however for all her down falls, I felt she was able to flee her demons and so wanted to make things right in the end. She did have one passion in life and that was flowers (which I thought saved her)and she was very good at it. I liked learning about the Language of flowers. Not a book everyone in our book club enjoyed, however that's what we like is to see how each person sees the book from their perspective....more

I liked that the story line was about 3 women, with different backgrounds, would all meet on this maiden voyage of The Paris. (Thoughts of the Titanic were with me while reading this, maybe that's why I expected more) Within the first 75 pages I began to feel this book was starting to bore me. I could pretty much feel what was going to happen to each character. I felt that the writer was a novice, not a lot power in her writing. It was a fast read which I liked, but I began to start skimming pages. Sometimes I felt like this took place much later, not sure why, maybe not descriptive enough. I really only gave it a 2 1/2. Added note: Most of my book club gave it a higher rating than I did. ...more

I have never read anything else by this author, but the book did hold my interest even though I shed alot of tears and could not imagine how any woman could be as strong as Anya. Ones life challenges really do make the person. I read this book in about three days, that for me is how I know it was a good book. I'm glad my cousin hooked me up with this book....more
