I hI loved the sound of this historical rural crime and mystery book. It is the second book to feature Gus Hawkins, a war vet and now police officer. I haven’t read Bone Lands yet, and I am wondering how that one passed me by. I will certainly be rectifying that omission very soon after loving Skull Riverrl.
I could not stop reading this once I started it, Hawkins is back and this time sent to the small town of Colley. He hasn’t been there long when chaos erupts. His partner is shot, and the police station with all its records is burnt to the ground. This is just the beginning. There is a high body count in this one, with plenty of dodgy characters. But it was hard to know who to trust.
I really did love the main character of Hawkins. He is damaged and suffers PTSD after what her did and saw in the war. He loves his lady despite not being with her, and he is a dog lover. What else do you need to know.
With an intriguing ending, I will absolutely be looking out for book 3 in the future, thanks to Simon and Schuster Australia, Affirm for my NetGalley copy and physical arc....more

Maddy is a ghostwriter, and has been hired by a well known cosmetic surgeon, Angela Reynolds, to write her memoir. She is invited to her house in the Scottish Highlands to write and research. But Angela is only there a few hours before jetting off to see patients. Maddy gets increasingly frustrated with the lack of information on Angela, and the woman is not very forthcoming with her life story. Her time at the house is not what she expected ,and she meets Angela’s business partner Scott, and the 2 hit it off.
I don’t really want to say too much more as it will spoil the story for you. It certainly picks up pace in the second half, with so much happening. Maddy was a strange character, she was very obsessive and her relationship with Scott is built up into something so fast despite the fact they hardly know each other. I just went with it while shaking my head at times.

We are taken back to 1950s Sydney, Australia. Television is about to come to Australia for the first time, women cannot work after they get married must keep house. Martha Berry has just turned 50 and has been working at the ABC since it started, 24 years earlier. She has worked in almost all departments, always as a secretary and has never had a raise. Now she is assigned to work with young man, straight out of university who is going to write and produce the new radio serial, As The Sun Sets. It soon becomes obvious that he really doesn’t know what he is doing and Martha must step in to save the show.
I just loved the women in this book. I am so happy that things have changed for women in this country, I cannot imagine growing up in these times. I really enjoyed the menopause storyline, as somebody of a similar age to Martha. It was wonderful the way she forced conversation.
This book made me laugh, it made me angry, it made me smile. So so good. The audio was superb, the narrator did a great job with all the voices. ...more

Set in my hometown of How is this the first book by BM Carroll that I have read? Seriously need to rectify that. This book was insane, in a good way. Set in my hometown of Sydney really made this book so real to me. I could picture the scenes, the concert, the trains, everything. I had no how it was going to end and was really surprised by how it all unfolded.
It has been a tough yeah for all the members of the Sullivan family. Parents , Rachel and Rory decide a night out seeing one of their favourite bands, Coldplay is in order and they book tickets. Only they have to be split up, kids on the grassed general admin area while the parents are in the stands. They arrange a meeting spot after the show but one of them doesn’t turn up.
This is my worst nightmare as a parent. We go to the SCG at Moore Park quite a lot for Sydney Swans games so we know the area well. I always worry that one of us will get lost in the huge crowds. It is scary and that came through in the writing.
A story of a family with plenty of secrets and lies amongst them. Absolutely terrifying and well worth a read.

At first, the death oIt Takes A Town to solve a murder and the town of Welcome is more than happy to stick their noses in and help the investigation.
At first, the death of minor celebrity, Vanessa Walton, appears to be a tragic accident. The new sergeant in town, Carol Duffy is called to the scene after the storms have hit the small town. Nothing suspicious here. But others in town feel differently. Vanessa might have been the most famous person to have come out of Welcome, but not everyone was a fan. And then a high school girl goes missing. Just what is happening here?
I do love a small town murder mystery, and this fictional town of Welcome certainly has some interesting characters. This was funny at times, dark in others, making for an entertaining story.

73 year old Hector Harrow is the concierge at the Cavengreen Hotel in the Yorkshire Dales. It is a hotel for the wealthy, and he takes pride in his work. Nothing is too much for the guests. But everything things changes when one of the guests Is murdered and the hotel goes into lockdown until the police can find the killer.
I loved the narrative style of this book. It is Hector telling his story after the events. It feels so real. There are some very unlikeable characters in this story but who is murdered and by who, and why? You need to read it find that out. It is a quick, easy cosy mystery in a beautiful setting. Plenty of twists to keep you guessing.
