The writers obviously did their research (*17 pages of endnotes*) but it's sandwiched into a narrative that's awkward and hard to follow -- even knowing something about this period, I kept going, 'Wait, who did WHAT??' The main character is barely a character, she just wanders through events and receives exposition. This is worth flipping through for the art --a sequence depicting the force feeding of hunger strikers is the sort of thing comics do in a way that no other medium can -- and you'll pick up some facts about the suffrage movement in Great Britain. But overall it's not a very good way to encounter this history for the first time, and the storytelling is not likely to be engaging or satisfying if you already know it....more

He's sort if a lone wolf vigilante antihero here, and the story ties in elements I haven't seen explored for a while, like the destruction of Genosha. I'm interested in reading the rest of the series (probably whenever I'm back on Marvel unlimited?). The art gets the job done but is not my personal favorite... also I am sure there's a deep meta reason for Mags to have his head shaved, professor X style, but I missed the flowing silver locks!...more

It's informative yet conversational and personal -- if you've dealt w/ mental health treatment, you may relate; if you haven*'t it's a really good way to understand the experience better. It's encouraging overall (allowing for the realization that, as Forney frankly states, she was only able to afford the quality and consistency of treatment b/c her mother was willing and able to pay her psychiatrist's bills). Content notes -- fair amount of illicit drug use + drawings of naked ladies, so keep in mind if you're going to read it on the bus or let kids flip through it.
I love Forney's description of her relation to other mentally ill artists -- Club Van Gogh -- plus the way she talks about using her sketch pad to record her emotions during a bad episode " A combination of carrying a teddy bear and carrying a can of mace '...more
