I am so happy I finally read this! As a sci fi lover I have always wanted to read Kindred and I can now say that it is worth the hype. I found the characters to be nuanced and well drawn and the story to be engaging from page one. The only reason this sint five stars is because I wanted the science and of the science fiction to be explained it more detail and it just wasnt. Also the writing style wasnt my absolute favorite. Those two critiques aside though I am absolutely planning on picking up more Octavia E. Butler in the very near future....more

So...I read this at work. And Incried at work. This was a poignant and incredibly well written book about an awful incident in our countries history. I genuinely loved so much of this story. My one complaint with this is that the story focused so heavily on a boy who was outside of the main action of the story so the story was not truly as tense as it should have been until about halfway through the book. That aside though this is a poignant and realistic look at the event surrounding the murder of Emmett Till which is a story that feels very pertinent to where we are currently....more

Unfortunately I found the characters did not connect with me, and as a character driven reader that did hinder my enjoyment a bit. While I loved the plot and the setting the reasons this did not get a full five stars are mainly a lack of character development and some uneven pacing. These cons aside though I cannot wait to hop into book two and see where the story progresses and how the author's writing progresses as well. Absolutely recommend this to fans of fast paced time-travel reads!

I found that the middle dragged for me and I also found most of the side character to be less compelling than I expected, especially because this is a wonderland tale. That aside this was really fun and dark and whimsical and a worthwhile Alice retelling!

That aside the writing is gorgeous the characters are gorgeous and Armie Hammer as the narrator really was a treat. I highly recommend this if you want a deeply gorgeous, yet flawed book about coming of age, the exploration of internalized homophobia, and the strength of one person's impact on a life. An alternate history set in new Orleans following a 13 year old girl who shares her mind with a goddess and joins forces with a mysterious and intriguing lesbian who is the captain of a ship that transports weapons to union soldiers. I have truly never read another book like this and I loved that about this. My only complaint is that I wish this was a little bit more fleshed out. That aside I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to read a wholly unique and immersive tale!...more
