But my book club picked it for next year, and the library had it, so I reluctantly picked it back up again. It's not a bad book by any means, I just didn't connect with the story. Milo lives in a coastal town that rife with smuggling. This Christmas, he's hoping for a quiet holiday with his family, but during a terrible storm the house fills up with guests. Everyone has secrets. No one can be trusted. Or can they? Neat twist at the end bumped it up half a star. Definitely reads like a Middle Grade book, but a somewhat clever one. I think kids up to 10 will like it, but I had to push myself to finish....more

I wish there was a glossary of terms in the back because Muir has created such a complex world and I didn't always understand. I mean, I am a little behind on my necromancy! (Sorry.) But the last quarter of the book just blew me away! Definitely worth reading (but read Gideon the Ninth first) and I can't wait for book 3....more
