I expected some trick somewhere that kept all those readers happy - but no trick found, just a thoroughly enjoyable piece.
Brandon very rarely indulges himself, almost everything feels like it is happening for a reason or an intention for a future reveal - that’s why so many people complain about the slow start, but very quickly the mystery is just too big to stop.
The rise of conflict to a crescendo at the end is worth the long read, I don’t remember reading such an enjoyable novel since Harry Potter! ...more

The book was strongest when it encouraged outdoors play and accepting that kids will get dirty (middle of the book)
The ending was very underwhelming for me - it was nicely written but not very related to the book’s thesis.

It starts off a bit slow trying to convince the reader that vegetables are good for you - I don’t need convincing about that. As it went on - it got to the techniques and suggestions for improving metabolic health. It ends with a very concrete plan and even some “Good Energy recipes to put previous suggestions into action. I love the practicality and I know for sure I will be coming back to check it out.
I took one star away because the book tries too hard to blame all ailments on metabolic disease. At the very least, that’s a stretch that’s not supported by science, “Ageing could be an independent process related to entropy, and I don’t think we have any proof pointing otherwise - nor did the book tackle that. The book gets a bit cringe/hippie-dippie at points, so be warned. There is some dancing between personal experience to published research that makes it confusing at times at which level of authority the general tone is. ...more

I have read several of Newport’s books but this one is definitely on a new level. The essence of the book is that work that can be done in a distracted state is 1. work that soon will be done by machines, and 2. Less rewarding.
I might be wrong but this one prob started the following barrage of anti-technology books, maybe 4 hour work week as well was as early.
The recommended techniques has stood the test if time IMO and def worth a read for anyone struggling with productivity in a distracted world. Being available 24-7 is a sure way to become insane. ...more

Probably my first conspiracy theory text? :) I have lots of respect for the effort it takes to write a public education text, but this one comes off short.
The weird stuff: - He talks about fiber as if it is one thing. soluable vs insoluble fiber is not discussed at all, although they are both digested very differently - Claims that Japanese diet has no fiber in - he has not heard of edmame - Lots of hyperbole that “fiber is the enemy, summarized by “fiber makes your poop big & doctors are not smart enough to notice. Let’s ignore thousands of studies on nutrition science, it is all paid for by big fiber.
My theory based on author’s background is that he’s a recovering diabetic who fixed his diabetes by decreasing his carb intake but then realized his GI issues improved as a by-product. That makes sense - but 1. It does not mean fiber/carbs are bad given that we evolved to be omnivores 2. Does not mean that his health is in tip top shape otherwise. One can go on a no food fast that fixes their GI maladies but that does not food is a menace.
That being said, I found the parts about gut microbiome and dysbiosis quite interesting, and so his detailing of GI anatomy. I also completely agree with his criticism of medicine-dependency for GI issues, and using diet and lifestyle instead, but that’s mainstream at this point.
You know what? That was a refreshing read! ...more

In its essence tho, if you can ignore all the get-rich-easy maneuvers, this book is about personal freedom and living life to the fullest. It will get you thinking about those things, and that’s enough for a book....more
