These are light and fun and highly enjoyable. They are never my first picks for mystery novels, but I have yet to read one and not enjoy it. Recommended....more
Ugh. One of the worst books I've read in years. Terrible writing, awful characters, awkward dialogue, reams of poorly edited text.
Fast read because I Ugh. One of the worst books I've read in years. Terrible writing, awful characters, awkward dialogue, reams of poorly edited text.
Fast read because I was dying to move on to something else. Takes a nonsensical premise and doesn't even wrangle a good thriller out of it. Everything that happens is telegraphed a mile away and the characters so dull that I couldn't bear them.

Yes, you have to remember when these were written but the casual use of the n-word and some dire anti-Semitism really get things off on the wrong foot, doubly so since they add big old nothing to the story.
If you can make it past that particular stumbling block (and who’d blame you if you couldn’t), this IS one of my favorite Poirot mysteries. It is in no way the best, but I have always loved the complex simplicity of the mystery, the well-done characterization of the murderer, and the usual low-rent Watson antics from Hastings (who, it must be said, makes Watson come off like a Rhodes scholar by sheer comparison). Poirot is at his eccentric best throughout.
It ends with what amounts to a fantastic double denouement of sorts where Poirot has one of his best ‘lay it all out scenes that ends up dunking on somebody, then one of the better epilogues in the series. It’s not perfect (see above), and has the usual half-hearted romance aspect at the end and trite characterization, but it’s still a fun whodunnit....more
