I wouldn't call him pretentious or describe him as having "a chip on his shoulder". I think if people see that, they are just upset they can't write as knowledgeably (is that a word) or clearly about their own passions. Passions that might be in conflict with the overall theme of this book.
I think the most noble compassion is one willing to devote a lifetime of one's abilities to injustice- even if that injustice is wrapped in thick and popular social projections.
Its ok if religion can't stack up to the arguments or can't come up with reasonable answers to some of the questions that are posed- that's not the point of religion. The point of religion (nowadays) is to comfort certain-minded individuals and to offer organization of a group of people so everyone can feel they belong; so everyone can feel safe. Well, safe as long as they don't venture outside chosen religion.
If god's your thing you don't have to be upset about a well-written and well-researched book; you might, however have to deal with some nagging quesions....or not.
