The Doctor and Martha travel back to the Wild West. They hear of a traveling medicine man who actually cured people who had smallpox. Way before a cure was found. By the time they get there Godlove is gone. Rather a couple of [alien possessed] desperadoes come into town looking for the healer and kill the sheriff. The Doctor recognizes the [type of] aliens and knows they aren’t going to just get what they came for and leave. They’re going to sterilize the surrounding area.
The Doctor is befriended by the school teacher and the sheriff’s son. The son having received the cure, but is now cursed with nightmares. They head off to the next town. Quick read, flows like a TV episode. 3.9 stars....more

The TARDIS lands in between a couple of villages. The Doctor and Martha want to get a spot of tea and decide to head towards Creighton Mere since it’s closer. There they find Angela and Sadie who have formed a restoration committee for the old well. Meanwhile Nigel w/ Ben and Duncan is trying to get to the wishing well treasure, albeit from a tunnel. Of course being a Doctor Who book, it’s not a treasure down there but some [dangerous to humanity] alien presence.
Quick read. 3.8 stars. This is the fourth Doctor and Martha practically in a row because they came in a box set. All separate novels. Normally I say things like the movie wasn’t as good as the book. With Doctor Who the humorous banter between him and his companions comes through better in the TV episodes, and on TV we forgive the “science much more easily. That said it is just like a television episode and we can’t be too harsh on it for living within those constraints....more

They arrive in the engine room, find that it is isolated from the rest of the ship by a barrier that feels like scrambled eggs but impenetrable. The Doctor explains that it is a result of the experimental drive cause time difference between the different parts of the ship. He uses his sonic screwdriver to allow himself and Martha to go through. Martha went first and before the Doctor made it through she is escorted to the cocktail lounge where three badger faced pirates show up.
The pirates are kind of childlike and Martha attempts to show them killing people is wrong, they are being used and they should strive for a better life. Killing people is wrong even if they just disappear and come back to life in their berth. Which seems to be what's happening here. The Doctor figures out that it's a time loop, but it takes energy and once that is gone, boom.
The Doctor's quirky humor, the childlike innocence of the badgers, and the rest of the doctor who flavor doesn't come through quite as strong as the episodes on TV. It's there but you need to get the proper frame of mind. I'm too literal when I read, so I'm missing some of that. 3.8 stars....more

He offers to take them to lunch with King Edward, but when they return to the castle they find that Balmoral has vanished. Hearkens back to the episode where the Doctor met Martha. The Judoon were hunting someone and took the hospital where Martha worked to the moon. They immediately think Judoon, but why? The Judoon aren't invaders, who hired them and what is their intent? First things first, the Doctor has Martha and Carruthers track down the lead of who had Harry carry that weird ball into the castle while he tries to find where the castle is now.
Quick read, novella length. Nice nostalgia for watchers of the series that remember Martha's first appearance. Typical Doctor Who using more brain than brawn to solve a problem which might be much more dangerous than revealed by first glance. Four stars....more

The Doctor is mistaken for an ambassador, then for a holy man. The Duke was expecting an ambassador from Conrad who has gathered an army and is on his way conquering Varuz. Shortly after that another visitor comes and is also taken to be the ambassador. He’s just a collector coming there looking for the Glamour. He and Clara get banished from Varuz shortly before a band of knights on a quest for the Grail show up. Lancelot is charismatic and gets the local knights to follow him on his quest. The Duke allows it because morale had been low and this seems to be bringing them together.
It was halfway through the book before the Doctor and Clara were doing anything except trying to broker peace. I didn’t think they she really be interfering in world politics. That’s beyond their usual scope. It was a fast read, and pretty much like a TV episode. Four stars....more

They find a roving band of savages trying to kill them, and a party of humans trying to mine a rare mineral that will defeat a space plague. To make matters worse a ship of Daleks lands and immediately tries to exterminate them. Fortunately whatever had drained the energy from the TARDIS also affected the Dalek energy weapons, too. It was a short reprieve the Daleks on the ship quickly built more traditional weapons. The Exillons capture and want to sacrifice Sarah and the Doctor.
Things look desperate. Not only will our heroes die, but the mining ship will fail to return will the mineral that can save millions of lives. Fast read, familiar characters, 3.8 stars....more

The fourth is caught in a time vortex, the others along with their companions are deposited in a sealed off area called the Death Zone on Gallifrey. The fifth doctor feels himself fading and programs the TARDIS to go where his previous selves are. The High Council knows something is up and sends in the Master to save the Doctor. In the Death Zone now are four iterations of the Doctor, several companions, the Master, and a bunch of monsters (Cybermen, a Dalek, another robot killing machine, Yetis) The Doctors all independently decide to go to the Tower of Rassilon. Meanwhile the Player, the person who used the timescoop, may have other tricks up his sleeve.
A romp. All of the Doctors have to pull their weight getting out of tricky situations. So there are a lot of scene shifts. If you're not familiar with the characters you could get confused. I was fine, I even heard the squeaky Dalek voice in my head as I was reading "exterminate." Probably better as a TV episode. 3.7 stars....more

Ultra rich Ray Balfour funds a research team to investigate a Phaeron wormhole. The Phaeron had built a network of these, but the Phaeron and all but this last wormhole are gone. On the trip out we are introduced to the four members of the research team and the four that make up the ship's crew. Of the research team we find that Marco is an ass. Among the crew the Doctor and Clara are kind of aghast about the fact that Jem, the astrogater, had been cloned specifically to be interfaced with a ship for this particular job.
The ship goes into the wormhole comes out between galaxies. There is nothing out there...or is there (thank you for the idea Doctor). They come to an inhospitable planet with seventy-two hours of air. But there are time fluctuations on the planet and the danger changes from running of air to the local flora and fauna. It builds to a climax with the Phaeron (not bad guys) and the Glamour (if this runs amok, it's bad news for any living beings) and our party.
Fast read. Up until the climax it felt like they were observers, that the action was happening to them and their decisions were negligible. 3.6 stars, probably better if it were a TV episode, then you could hear the inflection of the voices and catch the humor and jokes, and maybe give the Glamour more depth.
