I enjoyed the narrator's performance with the varied voices, although I see she will narrate the second book, which is about Lorelei, and Lorelai's voice was a bit annoying to listen to... So, I'm not sure I'd last a whole book listening to it. ...more

I don't think I've read enough second chance romance to say whether I truly like the trope or not, but I will say that here I was disappointed that we didn't really get a chance to see just why Yasmen and Josiah worked so well before everything fell apart. It seemed like the foundation of their relationship was just good sex, and I'd get whiplash from the way they'd go from trying to talk about their trauma to being horny like 0.2 seconds later. I also thought the pacing of the book overall was glacial; I felt like I'd been reading for a month, but when I checked I was barely at 50% ...more

Chris Atkins' recounting of his time in prison for tax fraud was illuminating, sad, funny and infuriating. He narrates the audiobook and although I've seen people say how they dislike the way he impersonated the other inmates and officers (and I guess he does make it a little over-the-top, bordering on offensive, here and there) having recently listened to an audiobook where the narrator didn't perform at all and all the characters sounded the same, I did appreciate that Atkins tried to make his narration dynamic and interesting. I also liked the thought put into making the audiobook easy to follow, with including music to indicate when a chapter summary or a call-out box was being read versus the start of a diary entry....more

Rounded down because this was such a frustrating reading experience. I still really like Butcher & Blackbird and might relisten at some poin1.5 stars.
Rounded down because this was such a frustrating reading experience. I still really like Butcher & Blackbird and might relisten at some point, but I think Weaver unfortunately failed to finish the trilogy satisfactorily with Scythe & Sparrow. Tbh it kind of feels like she didn’t really know where to take the series after the success of B&B.
Rose had such a fun intro in B&B, but her and Fionn’s story ended up falling really flat. There was a distinct lack of plot and although I liked Rose’s spirit, she was just so bad at (view spoiler)[being a serial killer and had to be rescued by Fionn each time (no idea how she managed before she met him... like, it's revealed later that she might have upwards of 20 kills?? You can't tell me she got lucky escaping for ALL OF THEM) (hide spoiler)]. I guess it could be kind of interesting/funny to have a (view spoiler)[serial killer who doesn't have the stomach for it, but Rose then made such dumb decisions?? What do you mean she decided to kill this guy after overhearing a phone call and gets into his vehicle with a knife... BROKEN LEG AND CRUTCHES AND ALL?? Where is your sense?? (hide spoiler)]...more
