I found it extremely This was basically a graphic form of a self help book for people with Bipolar or if you are me, just the half of it, Depression. I found it extremely helpful, there are certain things you know in your heart will help you manage your mood disorder in the same way you know in your heart eating less and exercising more will help you manage your weight, but sometimes it is nice to have someone wax poetic on importance of sleep and routine.
Forney also describes the differences between CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) and I was so grateful for that, because I have been wondering how exactly they differ for awhile now, and its not something that I have been able to completely clear up with a google search. This book is like someone you trust doing the research for you, and when the research is about mental health and different therapeutic techniques you are grateful for the help from a source who isn't trying to sell you something.
Also I loved this author's first book Marbles, which is her graphic memoir of being dx with Bipolar. ...more

All these stories are about women, and it is kind of depressing to be in a woman's head. These stories made me realize I don't hate myself nearly as much as I could. ...more

I actually thought it was going to be a novel about a classics book club, and didn't realize it was a memoir until I dug in. So very well written, as a reader I love to read about readers, and how books can provide a timeline for one's life. I am not a big Jane Austen fan, and still don't feel ready to tackle her novels but this book did inspire me to pick up Madame Bovary which I am very excited to start. I love Persepolis, and this was an excellent aid to continue to understand the factors that led to the Islamic Revolution and how it affected life in Iran. I'll probably re-read Persepolis soon just to cement my knowledge.
"She stood there chewing her nails with the distracted concentration of a professional nail biter"
I don't know if that is the exact quote, I can't find it again, but it stuck in my memory because that was the best sentence about nail biting I've ever read.
I am probably going to ditch my copy of this book in one of those little free libraries, because although I did love it I don't see myself revisiting it and am trying to LET GO. ...more

I dunno, I really hated it. Like I get it, Don Quixote de la Mancha is a funny character, being a crazy old guy with a bowl on his head pretending to be a knight, I did laugh out loud (twice), and Sancho Plaza is another great character being a kind of stupid but very nice guy who is very unlucky and always getting beat up. I just didn't like how everyone else in the novel were playing MEAN jokes on them the entire time. I don't think its very funny to beat people up or make fun of them for being crazy or stupid. Like seriously fuck that duchess and duke.
I kind of liked the meta-ness of having the book about Don Quixote's exploits being talked about by the characters in the book of Don Quixote's exploits. I did not like all of Cervantes' stories within a story, there were like five love stories that took up many chapters, like I don't need to know every love story about every single person you meet along the road, they also all felt kind of the same.
Only two quotes worth mentioning "Hunger is the best sauce in the world." "To imagine that things in this life are always to remain as they are is to indulge in an idle dream."
I am going to ditch my copy, and give up the dream I had of reading it in the original Spanish because there is no way in hell I am going to put myself through that. ...more

I'My dad lent me Pete Hamilll's book Forever to read a long time ago so I have a soft spot for Pete Hamill, just like my soft spot for my grumpy dad. I've had his memoir about alcoholism on my shelf for quite some time and finally got around to reading it. He talks about when his life of drinking caught up to him, he hadn't realized he was being charged but had to pay the price (ie: hand tremors). Interesting memoir of a childhood in BK born to Irish immigrants (from Belfast).
Apparently Pete Hamill is a big thing in my dad's and aunts' circle of people who were famous when they were young.
This book inspired me to read Don Quixote next, because Hamill talks about reading it as a kid and I thought if I kid can read this book then I why am I so intimidated to start. I didn't end up liking it very much. This book also inspired me to watch the movie Belfast which I liked very much. ...more
