I loved the characters and their banter. I did struggle a bit with all the different characters in the beginning, almost all of them get introduced in the first few chapters. It got a bit confusing.
The main mystery was interesting enough, and the little mysteries that we find out as the story progresses (about the characters background or past life), were also an interesting addition.
Although I enjoyed the book, and especially the Thursday Murder Club members, it did take me a while to read. Another confirmation that crime novels aren’t my thing.
I will try the next book in this series, just to see how it continues. We will see about the other two though....more
What a charming and fun read! Not going to lie, I was a bit doubtful at first that I'd like it, as I recently tried to read Emily Henry, which proved What a charming and fun read! Not going to lie, I was a bit doubtful at first that I'd like it, as I recently tried to read Emily Henry, which proved to me once again I can't get with modern romance books. Now, yes, this book is set in the Regency era, but it is written by a contemporary author, so I'm going to put it in the same box.
But as I said, I was pleasantly surprised. I rather liked it. The main romance was a lovers-to-haters trope, but I still liked it well enough, as it seemed more thought out than any other lovers-to-haters book I'd read so far. In general, the book delivered. My favourite things about it:
1. (Somewhat) Interesting characters. They have a backstory and reasons why they are how they are. The main female character, Kitty, could have been a bit more developed, but it still felt like she was a real enough person. I also thought the main male character was interesting and not too typical. Honestly, I thought about Pride and Prejudice a lot during this read—perhaps the book was inspired by Austen? I loved that though, it felt like the Regency era.
2. Layers and some complexity. Although I think the main complexity was in the author's writing style. She did an amazing job with writing it as if it was written in the Regency era (or more specifically by Jane Austen). It was fun, and I think it was that that mainly sold me on this book.
3. The plot wasn't too obvious; it had layers and it wasn't the usual obvious straight line. Yes, you could have predicted the final pairing between the characters, but still, the way we got there was interesting and most of all fun.
What I didn't like about the book:
1. Mostly it was one thing—the minor modern behaviours between the characters. It was nothing too outrageous (I think), but there were a few moments where their behaviour didn't exactly feel appropriate by 19th century standards.
I guess the conclusion is, it was a lovely and enjoyable read. Perfect if you need something to read between big or more demanding books. And this book did prove that I guess I'm all about historic settings for romance, either with reading classics or contemporary books set in some historic period....more
What a fun read! The first half of the book, I was thinking this might become my favourite book ever, or at least it might be part of Rating: 4.5 stars
What a fun read! The first half of the book, I was thinking this might become my favourite book ever, or at least it might be part of my top 5 of favourite books ever. Loved the flow of the story, the characters, the setting and the plot. All of it just came together to make a perfect story.
The other half I struggled just a little bit. It might have been my lack of interest in reading in general, as I picked the book up after a few days of not reading. But still, despite that it was a fun read and a fun conclusion of the story. I do think I need to reread it in the near future to judge it fairly.
Anyway, I recommend this gem to anyone loving Victorian setting and steampunk vibes. Can't wait to pick up the next book in the series!...more
