It Personal Response: I thought this was a great book. It got down to the nitty gritty details of what life was like as a soldier during The Great War. It showed how much bravery it took along with physical and mental strength. Plot: In this novel, a 17 year old boy named Adam, wanted to join the military. His mother would not allow this, so he traveled to visit his grandfather. Once Adam got there, he convinced his grandfather to sign and allow him to join. He joined the marines and made some very close friends during his hard times. Basic training was the hardest time period any of these men have endured by a long shot. Nearing the end of training, the sergeant who had been extremely mean to the others was finally nice to them. He congratulated the soldiers for their hard work and determination. He also stated that they would be fine soldiers and wished them the best of luck. After basic training, Adam and his friends were moved to Okinawa. This was an island very close to Japan. After taking control of this island, it will make it much easier to conquer Japan. While they are on the island, there is real gun fight and explosions. The soldiers had to hide in holes at night and take turns on watch so the enemy couldn鈥檛 sneak up on them. Along with trying to stay awake, the adrenaline and explosions made it hard to sleep. All of the soldiers looked sick and sleep deprived just a few days after arriving to the island. Characterization: Adam was the main character of this book. He was 17 years old and lived in California during The Great War. His father died at Pearl Harbor, so Adam wanted to join the military to avenge his father鈥檚 death. He had his grandfather sign to allow him to join the marines. His mother was furious with him, but she understood why he had to do it. Adam was one of the best marines at his camp. This was mostly because of his hard work and determination to be the best, but a little help went to the fact that his father was in the military. Sergeant Bessie was the antagonist in this book. He was the drill sergeant for Adam and his group. This man was extremely hard on the other soldiers. He was especially hard on Adam, because he knew that his father was in the navy. This made Sergeant Bessie angry, because he felt that Adam thought he was better than the rest of the group. Setting: Boot Camp was in Georgia. This was where they train to be a true, effective marine. After they graduated, they were moved to Okinawa, which was an island by Japan. The object was to take control of this island. The story took place during The Great War. This was the war that Adam wanted to be a part of and win the war. Thematic Connection: I think that knowledge versus ignorance is the best fit for this novel. The idea was to show that even if it wasn鈥檛 the smartest decision, humans would try to be the hero. Sometimes it was for other people to see them as heros, and sometimes it was for self glory. Adam wanted to avenge his father鈥檚 death. His mother wouldn鈥檛 sign and allow him to be in the marines, so he convinced his grandfather to sign. Adam went directly against what his mother told him to do, so he could be the hero. Recommendation: I would recommend this book to 17 and 18 year old males, especially those who have thought of joining the marines. The reason I did this is because that was the age group of men who the book revolved around. It also revolved around men who were in the marines instead of the Women鈥檚 Marine Corps. ...more |

It showed how the two young children acted during the 14 days that they were stuck. The cold and blizzard made it almost impossible to survive, yet they managed to do it with frostbitten feet and a broken ankle. Plot: The book started out when Tony found a dog and wanted to keep it. His parents did not want him to keep it. When they told him this, he got very upset. He stole his dad鈥檚 car, even though he did not know how to drive. He ended up finding a hitchhiker, who was a girl his age. They were driving away to Tony鈥檚 Uncle鈥檚 cabin when a terrible blizzard hit. Tony decided he knew where he was and kept going. Eventually, he drove straight off the road, because he could not see where he was. The car was stuck and low on gas. The two children were very scared and shocked, and their only option was to wait out the storm, which lasted for about 12 hours. When it finally stopped snowing, Cindy decided to go out and look for a road or a house. She was gone for only a few minutes before she came back with no luck and frostbitten feet. She was in terrible pain and could barely walk. Tony found some blankets and other warm supplies on the trunk while she was gone. They made a small fire in an oil can, and Tony gathered some wood from the nearby trees. They waited a few days before they decided that Tony needed to go out and look for help before the snow would fall again. Tony found a small hunting shack with some food in it. He made a fire and stayed there for a night and then went back for Cindy the following day. When he got back her feet were much healthier, and she was able to walk. Characterization: Tony was very angry at his parents for not letting him keep a wild dog that he found. He decided to steal his father's car and run away. He was about 13 years old and was very strong minded. For most of the book, Tony was not fond of Cindy, but towards the very end of their journey, he began to care for her a great deal. Cindy ran away from her home, because she felt like she was not important to anyone and that no one would miss her. She hitch hiked until Tony came along and picked her up. At first, she did not like Tony at all, but she quickly began to have feelings for him. Setting: This book took place in the backcountry of New York during present day winter. This was important, because this area got very harsh winters and strong blizzards that could be very dangerous. Thematic Connection Overcoming of nature is the best theme for this book, because the entire story was about two young children being stranded out in a terrible blizzard with little to stay warm. They used all of their brain power and effort just to make it back home alive. Recommendation: I recommend this book to middle school males. The main character was Tony and he fit into that group. I think that being that age and gender, the reader would relate well to him and understand his mindset. ...more |

Personal Response: I thought this was a pretty good book. It showed the life of a young high schooler who had a rough life growing up, but had friends to defend him. He moved to a different school, was nowhere near his friends anymore, and got bullied very bad. I liked how the boy was struggling with life, but he decided to take it into his own hands and change everything around and make life better for himself. He did it all in a good way, I believe, too. Plot This book was about a boy named Darrel. Previously, he lived in a bad town in Philadelphia from birth to freshman year. His mother had received a new job offer in California about a third of the way through Darrel鈥檚 freshman year. He was upset, because everything he knew was going to be left behind. Another reason he was upset was because, without his group of friends, he would have gotten picked on at his old school. He was worried that he would get picked on at his new school. When they arrived in California, Darrel decided he was going to try to make some new friends right away. He saw a group of guys and walked up to them with a big smile on his face. As he approached them, they saw him and pushed him around, looking for money to steal from him. They told him he was to come back every friday with money or they would beat him up. Darrel realized that he needed to grow physically and mentally stronger, so he decided to join the wrestling team. He learned many moves, but most importantly, he got stronger. After being on the team for some time, he began to make friends as well. He finally decided that he was done paying Tyray. When he did not pay him, Tyray was furious. He came to school and immediately tried to bully Darrel. He was prepared for this, though. He stared down Tyray, which was something Tyray was not used to. When Tyray went to hit Darrel, he was prepared for it. He dodged the fist, picked up Tyray, and he slammed him into the ground. While Tyray fell, he landed on his arm and broke it. The staff decided that Darrel defended himself and was off the hook, while Tyray was suspended. Characterization: Darrel was the main character. He was a freshman in high school and from a poor town in Philadelphia. His mother received a job offer from a slightly safer town in California. While Darrel was at his hometown, he often felt the only defense he had was his best friend, who was very large and strong. Having no friends and being very small, Darrel was an easy target in his new school and was bullied pretty badly. He tried to deal with it for a while, but it became too much. He decided to fix it himself and joined the wrestling team. He became stronger and stood up to his bully; solving his problem. Tyray was Darrel鈥檚 main bully. He was also a freshman who was in a gang and he was very strong and built, too. The bullying started on the very first day of Darrel鈥檚 arrival in California. He harassed him in school and took money from him every week. Eventually Darrel stood up for himself and broke Tyray鈥檚 arm and his reputation. No one was afraid of him anymore, and he was suspended from school. Setting: The setting was in Bluford High in California. It was during the first semester of Darrel鈥檚 freshman year. This was important for the story, because Bluford High was a sketchy school with a lot of gang activity and heavy bullying. It was important that it was during freshman year, because he was still very small and timid. He also did not have any friends. Thematic Connection: I feel that the theme of overcoming fear was the best fit for this book. The reason that I chose this theme was because at the beginning of the book, Darrel was very afraid of Tyray and his gang. As the book went on, Darrel made himself a stronger person. He joined the wrestling team and made friends while maturing a great deal. Eventually, he overcame his fear of Tyray and stood up to him. It ended up working out perfectly in Darrel鈥檚 favor. Recommendation: I would recommend this book to freshmen men. The main character of this book was a male. I chose freshman year, because that was the year that the main character was currently going through. People who moved schools during freshman year tended to struggle with finding friends. ...more |

The author would lead the reader mind a direction and then completely prove the reader鈥檚 prediction wrong. It kept the book interesting and fun to read. PLOT: This book was about a young boy named Jack. He was the best baseball player to ever go through his school and other schools in the area. He was the starting pitcher, and when he was not playing there, he played at shortstop. He also led the team offensively every year, but this year his mind was somewhere else. His brother had died recently by dirt biking in a dangerous area. Jack felt that the death of his brother was on his shoulders, because he could have stopped his brother from going out that night. His punishment to himself was that he could not go out for baseball this year. His team was concerned as to why he was not going out for his favorite sport and also for the success of their team. They were a great team, but he was the best and also their leader. Jack made new friends now that all his old buddies were together playing ball. He began to realize that his reasoning for not going out for baseball was wrong. He then found a note from his brother that he had written before he died. It stated how he felt for his little brother and how much he loved to watch Jack play. Jack knew that he needed to join his team once again. After he joined the team, he completely turned them around after they started the season with zero wins and three losses. They then went to a record with seven wins and three losses. CHARACTERIZATION: Jack was a nice and caring kid. He had an older brother that had recently died. Jack was the best baseball player to ever go through his school. He faced guilt over his brother鈥檚 death, because he felt he could have prevented it. He quit baseball and made new friends. Later, he realized how much he needed baseball and joined the team once again. Brad was Jack鈥檚 older brother. He was a crazy dare devil and always got into trouble, although he was one of the friendliest people in the community. He finally went too far one night while dirt biking in a dangerous area. He went over a jump and hit a tree and was killed. This hurt Jack鈥檚 family tremendously and resulted in his parents being very worrisome about Jack鈥檚 safety. SETTING: This story took place in a town called Walton. It took place during Jack鈥檚 eighth grade year; springtime. The setting was important, because Walton was a town known for baseball. That meant they had a great chance to go to the Little League World Series. It was important that it was during his eighth grade year, because that was when his brother died. It was also the year that they had the best chance at taking a shot to the World Series. THEMATIC CONNECTION: Communication is the theme that I chose. The reason that I chose this is because in the book, Jack lacked communication with his friends and family. He kept all of his emotions about his brother in and did not open up. He kept everything in, because he knew how everyone would react once they heard the news. Once he finally told his family why he quit baseball, they talked to him and showed him the letter that his brother wrote and he decided to join the team. RECOMMENDATION: I would recommend this book to males that are in 8th grade. The reason I chose this was because Jack was in 8th grade and he was the main character. I chose males, because baseball is generally played by men more than women. That makes this story more relatable to men than women. ...more |

It was not the best, though, because the author always came straight out and said exactly what he was thinking. If he did not throw all of the information right at me it would keep me more intrigued. The idea of the story was a good idea, though. PLOT: This story was about a junior in high school. He was very athletic, but because of his dad, who was a famous third baseman, Hal was always stuck playing third base. Even though he was a good baseball player, he was not a good third baseman. When Hal moved to a new school, his team already had a great third basemen that was a returning starter. Hal tried to beat out the third baseman, but his arm was not able to do the job. When the coach saw how well Hal could field, he knew he needed him somewhere on the field. He decided that with a weak arm, second base would fit him perfectly. He was also a great offensive player too. He never got very big hits, but he was very good at placing the ball when he made contact. He also worked the other team and made them throw lot of pitches. The only issue with the team was their heavy hitter, Warner, lost his spot to Hal. Warner has started at second base the past two years and now the new comer, Hal, took his spot and bumped him to right field. Warner felt that the only reason this happened is because the coach wanted to find a spot for the son of Ralph Stevenson. He quit the team and without his bat in the lineup, they lost the game. Hal and Warner鈥檚 friends talked to him and made him understand that the reason Hal started at second base was not because of his dad. Warner realized that they are right and decided to come back to the team. Once they finally had the full lineup, they had a great shot to make it to the championship. CHARACTERIZATION: Hal is a junior. He just recently transferred high schools. His father was a famous third baseman that played in the MLB. He was also a slugger. Hal was a very different type of baseball player. He did not have the arm to throw runners out from third base. Hal was still a great fielder, so he moved to second base. He also was a leadoff type of batter. He placed the ball in the gaps in the infield rather than trying to swing for the fences every time and just shot for a base hit. Warner was a returning senior who had started the last several years at second base. He assumed that he had the position with his name locked on it, but he struggled to field the balls cleanly. When the coach realized that Hal needed to play somewhere in the field, he also noticed how much Warner struggled to field the ball cleanly, so he moved Hal to that position. The coach moved Warner to right field, because even though he was not that strong of a defensive player, having him in the lineup was a key because of his power. SETTING: The setting of this story was in high school in Western Illinois. This was important, because it took place during the fall of Hal鈥檚 junior year. The setting was important, because he just recently transferred to this school this year in western Illinois. THEMATIC CONNECTION: Necessity of work was the theme that stuck out to me the most. The reason I thought that was because Hal always worked hard to make sure he got the most out of practice. He also knew the coach would see his hard work, and that would give him an edge over some of the other players as of who would start or not. RECOMMENDATION: I would recommend this book to males that are the age of 13-18. The reason I chose that age group was because the book revolved around a high school baseball team. It would make sense for that age group to read it, because they are in, or about, to go into high school. However, within that age group, the younger end of the range would be best because of how easy the book was to read. There was no explicit content in the book. The reason I chose males was because baseball is for males. ...more |

PERSONAL RESPONSE: I thought this was a great book. I also thought it was very clever, and it was an interesting way support the revolution. My friend PERSONAL RESPONSE: I thought this was a great book. I also thought it was very clever, and it was an interesting way support the revolution. My friend had told me before I read the book, making it much easier to relate to the real story. I thought it was interesting how the author thought of all the ideas to make it as similar as they could. PLOT: In this story, the wise pig, Old Major, started it off by telling the other animals in the barn about fate. He stated that no matter how good of a job you do performing for the farmer, you will get the bare minimum. He also said that as soon as you aren鈥檛 able to work anymore, you were to be strung up and killed so they could use your meat. It was too expensive for the humans to feed you if you weren鈥檛 able to work for them. CHARACTERIZATION: Old Major was the oldest animal that was still alive. Being older than the other animals, he was the wisest of them all. He told them in the beginning of the story about their fate as being farm animals. He died in his sleep three days later. Even though Old Major was only alive for four days of the story, he was still a key character in the story. The first leader after the revolution was a pig, and he was a good leader. He had the right ideas and was making the decisions for the good of the animals. Later, a different pig overtook the role of leading the farm. He lead strongly, but it was for the wrong purposes. He did everything all for himself, nothing was for the good of the animals. The old leader left after he was forced from his role. He later came back and showed that the new leader was not a good one. He was able to convince all of the others. SETTING: The setting was during the summer of 1945. This was key to the story, because it showed the Russian revolution and what led up to it. It took place in England. The reason that the author made it here was because when he wrote it, he wanted to make it a little closer to home. RECOMMENDATION: I would recommend this book to high schoolers because the book was a little harder to understand how it related to the revolution. I also recommend this book to males, because I feel that males tend to enjoy history more and this book was about the Russian Revolution. ...more |

Although these series of events have never directly affected me, I feel like it would be very relatable to someone who has had cancer or had a loved one deal with cancer. PLOT: This book was about a man named Randy. He had a wife named Jai and three kids ages five, three, and two. He was in his mid 40鈥檚 when he found out that he had pancreatic cancer. After some treatment and surgery, all of this seemed like it was working for him. Then, several months later, the cancer had spread into his liver and had metastasis. He was given three to six months to live normally, possibly another month or two to live in the hospital on machines. He was asked to give a speech a few days before he found out about this news. He was thinking about cancelling the speech like his wife wanted, but they decided to stick with it. He wanted to show that he was grateful for his life and family even though he didn鈥檛 have much time left. His speech was about his life from when he was young and what made him unique. He decided that he was unique because he made his childhood dreams come true. One of his biggest dreams was to work as an engineer for Disney World. He made that dream happen as he became a very promising computer engineer. He loved his job. He talked about when he was younger and how he loved how his family had raised him. He stated that he was a very good learner. He could always learn from his mistakes and his successes. He wanted his kids to be able to know who he really was and what he was like. The last thing he talks about that is important to him is about interacting with other people. He said it is always good to be as friendly as possible and show respect. It is important to build others up rather than tear them down. CHARACTERIZATION: Randy was diagnosed with cancer around his mid 40鈥檚. Treatment was going well for him for a while, but several months later they received the bad news of ten tumors in his liver and had only months to live. He wanted to give a speech to everyone, including recording it for his children to listen to his stories and life lessons. Jai was Randy鈥檚 wife. She was extremely distraught when she found out that his cancer had progressed and that he would be gone in a few months. She expected to spend her whole life with him. She also didn鈥檛 like the fact that he was going to leave her and the kids on her last birthday that he would be alive so that he could do his speech in a different state. SETTING: This book takes place in 2007. It is in southern Virginia. The reason it takes place in this area is because when the family found out that he was going to die, they moved closer to extended family. RECOMMENDATION I would recommend this book to high school females.I feel that the mature content is more appropriate for high schoolers. I felt females would enjoy it more than males because it has family drama in it and I feel that generally males don鈥檛 like to read about that. ...more |

It was more about the people who lived on the island and worked there. They never even were able to see the prisoners unless they were a guard. The island they lived on was not very large so they could see the actual prison from where they lived. It was somewhat based on a true story, and it was kind of a strange idea for Moose to realize that murderers and other criminals did his laundry. It was a decent book, but I would not recommend it because I thought it was going to be more about the prison itself and not the people and families that worked on the island. PLOT: Moose was a teenager and had a sister with autism. Her name was Natalie. The family needed more money so their father decided to try to work at the prison as a guard and as an engineer. He was very good at the engineering job, but Moose felt that he was too soft to be a guard and wouldn鈥檛 want to hurt someone if need be. Moose met a few people his age. He also loved to play baseball with his new friends on the island. His new best friend was very good at baseball and they gave each other tips on how to perfect their swings. There were several plans that the warden's daughter made, like the con laundry service. The warden usually found out quickly and put an end to it though. Natalie started developing a relationship with one of the cons. Moose was afraid that this would get her hurt or even killed. Natalie had to leave the school she was going to because of the relationship issue. Moose and the warden鈥檚 daughter wrote a handwritten letter to Al Capone asking him to use his connections inside the prison to help his sister get into a new, very good school that would fit her well. Only a few days later, she was accepted to the school with no questions asked. CHARACTERIZATION: Moose is a teenager with a older sister who has autism. He was living a fairly normal life in San Francisco, when his dad decided to get a new job at the Alcatraz prison. This meant that he was moving to the island along with his family. There were only a few people his age on the island, and one of them was the warden鈥檚 daughter, who tended to lie a lot. He also loved baseball, and he found a group of guys that played baseball every Monday. Piper was the same age as Moose. She was also the warden鈥檚 daughter. She always seemed like a very nice and respectful girl, but as soon as her dad wasn鈥檛 looking, she would try to make money off of the convicts or get someone in trouble. She started off not fond of Moose, but they came to like each other as the book moved on. SETTING: The setting was mid 1930鈥檚 on Devil鈥檚 Island. This was the island that was home to the famous Alcatraz prison. During the time that Moose was here, Alcatraz held people like Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly. RECOMMENDATION: I would recommend this book to high school females, because the age was appropriate for a somewhat more mature audience. The reason I recommend it to females is because it was more about relationships than the prison itself, which was not what I was expecting. ...more |

I enjoyed reading Drew鈥檚 story about his childhood in New York and his new life as a star in California. He was a junior at a school which was not really known to do well in basketball, that is until Drew arrived. He was getting attention from all over the place, starting from when he made a few great passes while ESPN was covering one of their games. As of that day, he had been getting more and more attention as he lit up the court. This book also had a great message in it. Although Drew was such a great athlete, he was still almost cut from the team because academics come first. On top of having issues with school, he was also having trouble dealing with the media and his own big head. With the help from a friend, he was able to realize the importance of teamwork and responsibility. Plot: Drew Robinson was a high school basketball star from California. He was the number one 鈥渘eed to get guy鈥 for colleges. He played point guard for Oakley Academy, a team which had not had much success in the past. Drew changed that very quickly. He was always being looked out for by his friends, teachers, and especially Mr. Gilbert. Seth Gilbert was a very wealthy man that noticed Drew from the game covered by ESPN. He loved his talent. He gave Drew anything he wanted, and he treated Drew like a son. Even with all of this money and attention, Drew still went to the old run down courts near his house late at night to ball or just relax. On one of his trips to the court, he saw an older man playing and could not believe his eyes. The old man could do things on a basketball court that only professional players were able to do. Drew tried to talk to him, but the man ran away. Later that month, he saw the man at one of his games, right after he made the game-deciding shoot and miss. Drew went to the park later and found the man playing ball. The old man talked down on Drew鈥檚 decision of not passing the ball. He called Drew out for what he really was: selfish, a show boat, greedy. This made Drew angry, mostly because he understood the man was speaking the truth. Drew wanted to catch up with the man again and talk to him more. While sitting in English class, Drew鈥檚 teacher assigned a research paper. He thought the perfect topic for him would be streetball legends. He did some research on old ballers, trying to find out who the man was. He came across a man, Urban 鈥淟egend鈥 Sellers. Sellers used to play for a high school team in Sacramento, but he let his life get away from him. He turned to drugs and alcohol, eventually 鈥渄ying鈥 in a fire at a homeless shelter. Drew could feel that this was the same man he had talked to. Drew continued going to the park, trying to meet up with the man, but he hadn鈥檛 been showing up. Drew finally saw him one day and followed him home. He knocked on the door and refused to leave without the man telling him his real name. The man confirmed that he was the man that Drew had been researching. As it turned out, a different man had been staying in Sellers鈥 room at the homeless shelter when it burned to the ground. Urban had been living near Drew now for quite a while, and he had a job working for the city. Drew asked if he could use Urban鈥檚 story for the paper he had just been assigned. Urban agreed to let him use the story of his life. These two created a strong relationship together. The old legend taught Drew a lot about basketball, focusing on the concept of teamwork. He also taught him how to be a better person. By learning from his own mistakes, Urban was able to show Drew a better path to follow. Urban made Drew a better player, and more importantly, a better person. Characterization: Drew Robinson was an amazing athlete. He had an amazing gift for the game of basketball. He worked much harder than anyone else did, trying to perfect his game. In being so much better than everyone else and always hearing the 鈥渉ype鈥 about himself, he became arrogant and selfish. Drew began to look towards his future career instead of his team and their goals. This attitude was also seen in games when Drew did not pass at the last second or dive for a loose ball. He met Urban and the man started to change the way Drew saw everything, including himself. Drew began to realize the importance of his teammates and friends. He lost his cocky attitude and selfishness. He started to become a better basketball player, and more importantly, a better person. Setting: Drew lived in present-day America. He was living in California with his mother, after moving from his old, run-down house in New York. Being a stellar athlete in California, Drew experienced tons of publicity. He was constantly on camera or being interviewed. Drew's personality was negatively affected by the continual media attention he received. It caused him to get a big head. Being influenced by his NBA idols, Drew would not always make the best decisions. Recommendation: I would recommend this book to high school, male athletes. They would be able to connect with Drew鈥檚 personal life and some of his struggles, on and off the field or court. ...more |

PERSONAL RESPONSE: This book wasn鈥檛 as interesting as I thought it would be. It wasn鈥檛 a terrible book though. It seemed unrealistic to me and too made up. Although, the idea of talking about Hitler having a daughter with birth defects and trying to hide her during the war is a good idea though. PLOT: Mark and his friends always made up stories when they waited for the bus. One time Anna made one of the best stories up. It was about how Hitler had a daughter who had a birth defect on her face. Since she had this defect, Hitler hid her from everyone. Only a few people knew about her; the ones he hired to take care of her. This all happened during Hitler鈥檚 rise and during the camps and killings. At first, Heidi didn鈥檛 really have an idea what was going on. She knew her dad was the leader and that Germany was at war. As the war went on, she began to realize that the things her dad was doing were not good intentions. She realized that he was an evil man. Later, she was in a house in Berlin. There was a bombing and she survived. She escaped out of the destroyed house and moved to Australia. Heidi never told anyone she was Hitler鈥檚 until many years later, she finally told her granddaughter CHARACTERIZATION: Mark always loved the daily stories before school. This one was his favorite and it made him interested in WWII and Hitler鈥檚 life. Heidi was Hitler鈥檚 made up daughter. She had a birth defect that was a big mark on her face. Hitler couldn鈥檛 let anyone know about his imperfect daughter because of what he was doing so he his her. He put her in a house and only a select few knew about her. They were the ones who took care of her. SETTING: The setting of the story that Heidi told was in Berlin during WWII. This is important because it is where Hitler hid his daughter and later in the story it uses the bombing in Berlin to give her an escape. RECOMMENDATION: I would recommend this book to girls in middle school or late elementary school. I would do this because the main character is a girl so I feel that they would relate better. I feel like the grade level is much lower than high school. ...more |

I liked how even though almost every single person in the courthouse was against him, Drummond still found a way to keep it fairly even. He still lost the case, but he changed the views of himself and of the law to the public. Then he and his client took it up to the Supreme Court. PLOT: Cates was a teacher in Hillsboro, TN. He was a biology teacher who was supposed to be teaching creationism; instead, he taught about Darwin鈥檚 book of evolution. He thought that the children should be able to learn both sides and that they could decide which one they want to believe. He broke the Butler Act, which prohibited the teaching of evolution and was then put on trial. Hillsboro was a very religious city. They found a lawyer that was also religious and treated him like a king when he arrived. The other lawyer was a very good one that is known for getting people out of sticky situations, even if they really were guilty. It started out everyone hating this new lawyer because they thought he was uneducated and against religion, when in reality he was just open and educated on both sides. During the trial, Drummond questioned Brady and everyone found out that Drummond really was educated in both ideas. Even though he started to bring him and his client into a more even field, he still lost. Now he wants to appeal his way up to the Supreme Court and the news company paid his bail of $100. CHARACTERIZATION: Drummond is a lawyer that is known to help people that are almost guaranteed to be convicted because he finds legal ways to make them free. He is agnostic meaning he isn鈥檛 in a religion, but he is educated about both religion and evolution. Brady is also a good lawyer. He is very religious and uses religion as his defense for everything during trials. He does not want to open up and hear any other theories. Cates is the teacher who broke the law to make this whole story happen. He teaches evolution when he is only supposed to be teaching creationism. Rachael is Cate's friend. She is his girlfriend or they have a thing going on. She is also the reverend's daughter. SETTING: The Scope鈥檚 Trials takes place in July, 1925 in Dayton, Tennessee. This was important because at that time, they did not allow the teaching of evolution. This especially happened towards the south, because the north did not face this issue. RECOMMENDATION: I recommend this book to male high schoolers. The reason I recommend it to males is because most of the main characters are males. I especially recommend this book to those who like to read about heated arguments because those were common in this book. ...more |

PERSONAL RESPONSE: I thought this was a great book. It was about bad things, but it was very interesting. It showed how your life can be when you are a PERSONAL RESPONSE: I thought this was a great book. It was about bad things, but it was very interesting. It showed how your life can be when you are at rock bottom. Kristina was a very good person, but along with drugs she was not herself at all. She thought that she was in control of her use of meth, but you can tell how as the story goes on, she was less confident that she was in control. It was obvious to the reader that she was using much more than she realized, and she was not in control at all. PLOT: This book was about a girl named Kristina. She had a good family at home, but her dad was a very bad drug addict. He was addicted to cocaine and crystal meth. Kristina was a very good girl before last summer. She went and visited him for a little while, and her dad and a boy got her involved with crystal meth. It did not take long for her to get addicted. When she went back home, she was still addicted to it, and even without her regular connections, she found people who could get it to her. She was involved in a bad group of people. Then, she turned 18 and got a job at the gas station down the road. She had a baby boy named Hunter and was trying to get her GED. She hadn鈥檛 smoked meth in months. Then she got a very strong calling to herself to go buy some from an old friend. She went and got enough that she planned on lasting two or three months. It ended up lasting her about one month so she decided to get more. She was hooked again, and she was already going downhill fast. She was kicked out of her parents house and was not able to keep her baby because her parents kept him. She moved in with her boyfriend鈥檚 uncle, even though the boyfriend was usually a few hours away. It also was convenient to live with Brad, because that was where she got her meth from, and he didn鈥檛 care what she did as long as it didn鈥檛 get him and his children into trouble. CHARACTERIZATION: Kristina was a good person, but she was heavily involved with drugs, making her not so much of a good person. Her life was starting to revolve around meth again. She couldn鈥檛 take care of her child and could barely take care of herself. Trey was Kristina鈥檚 boyfriend. He was her main hook-up for meth and she was living with his uncle. He was a pretty decent guy, besides the fact that he was cheating on her. Brad was Trey鈥檚 uncle and this was where Kristina lived after getting kicked out of her parents house. Brad was very nice and he was her hook-up for meth, so she saw this as a very good situation. He gave her the job of being his kids nanny. Later he offered her to sell his meth so he could sell more and then Kristina could make a profit on it,too. SETTING: The setting was in Reno, Nevada and was in the present. This was important, because they were fairly close to Arizona and New Mexico, which were big areas for meth, so it was easy for Kristina to get. RECOMMENDATION: This book was definitely recommended to at least high school level because of the mature content. I would recommend it to both genders, although, I feel as though females would appreciate it more, because the narrator and main character were also female. ...more |

It also talked a lot about how they led their team to win superbowls and turned their teams around. It also showed their stats and awards that they have won, and it showed all of the records that they have set. These star quarterbacks started at day one with their father, Archie Manning. Plot: This book is about how Archie Manning and his two sons, Peyton and Eli, made their careers of football. It started back in high school, and all three of them were quarterbacks. Peyton and Eli didn鈥檛 really play their freshman year in high school, but for their sophomore year they both started and lit up the field. Payton went through school a few years earlier, and they set tons of records there. Then came along Eli,and if he wasn鈥檛 breaking his records, he was very close. Archie went to Ole Miss for college and set records, and Eli came and beat all of his records.Peyton went to University of Tennessee and shattered records. Characterization: Peyton Manning was the second child in the Manning family. He was a great quarterback and leader. Everyone looked up to him, and he didn鈥檛 have many people dislike him. However, many people were jealous of him, because he was so talented. Eli Manning was the third and final child in the Manning family. He was about as good as Peyton, but both had some things they did better than the other. They both went to the same high school and did great. Then they went to different colleges and did amazing there. Both were then early picks in the NFL draft, and they did even better at the professional level. Setting: This book doesn鈥檛 have a specific setting. Isidore Newman High School is where it started out for both Eli and Peyton Manning. For Peyton, the setting changed to Tennessee University and then Indianapolis to play for the Colts. Eli鈥檚 setting was Ole Miss University and then New York. This was important to the story, because it showed where they were living when they were playing on each different team. Recommendation: I would recommend this book to middle school or high school boys, because it is simple book. It was a very interesting book to read at the reading level. Also, the reason I recommended it to boys was because usually guys tend to like football more than women do. ...more |

Eve PERSONAL RESPONSE: This book was a well written book. The way the author wrote while Michael was in a game just kept you amazed by Jordan鈥檚 talent. Even when he wasn鈥檛 doing anything special, it was still awesome. He did a great job of informing you how his life was all the way back from when he first learned the sport of basketball. PLOT: This book was about the famous basketball legend, Michael Jordan. It told you where he started as a young boy to where progressed. When he started, his skills were below average. His older brother, on the other hand, was one of the best in the school. Jordan was determined to beat his brother, and that is what drove him to be as great as he is now. As he went through high school, he was above average. By his senior year, he recieved a lot of contracts from big colleges. He then was offered a full ride to North Carolina University. Jordan was injured for a few weeks, and he only got a few weeks of practice before the first game, but his coach still started him. Jordan did not do as great as everyone thought he would. He was adapting to the college game. He soon became one of the best college basketball players in the country. He kept getting better and better. He was drafted into to the NBA to the Chicago Bulls. He was a starter from day 1. He was getting better, and he became one of the best players of all time. He led his team to win six NBA championships. He retired three times, because he kept coming out of retirement. CHARACTERIZATION: Michael Jordan was a great basketball player, and he was an even better man. He was nice and generous, especially to young kids. He was a family man, and he was very humble for being the most iconic basketball player in the world. James Jordan was Michael鈥檚 father. He was one of Michael鈥檚 best friends. He taught him the love for basketball and how to play the game. Even when Michael was a professional basketball player, he still went to his father for help about the game when he struggled. One day when he went to go visit his friends on the other side of the state, he was murdered. He took a nap on the side of the highway after he drove halfway. Two teenagers wanted the car so they killed him, and they left him in the river. SETTING: The setting was 1969 until 2008. The whole story took place in North Carolina, until 1984, when he was drafted to the Chicago Bulls. Once he was drafted to the Chicago bulls, he moved there. RECOMMENDATION: I would recommend this book to middle school boys, because it was a very simple read. I thought boys typically enjoyed hearing about Michael Jordan more than girls. ...more |

There are programs that PERSONAL RESPONSE: This book is very hard to follow along with because it is fiction and does not make any sense to real life. There are programs that are made into real people with a heart and a brain. They go into a Coffin and that takes them to the Sleep, which is a digital world that they can do anything in like play games, hang out, and work. It is in the future because everyone has technology built into them like holograms and phones. I did not like this book as much as I thought I would have because of the confusing, unrealistic parts. PLOT: The plot of this book is there are three friends who all met through the Sleep. They have been extremely close for several years. They have a general idea of where each other live, but they have never met each other in real life. Mike is not even a real person. He is just a program that is in the sleep. He is a very long and advanced binary code. He can still think and make his own decisions though so he is thought of as a human by his friends. He is very smart with using binary code to change things and knows how things work, but Kaine is even more knowledgeable and even more powerful. Kaine figured out how to get Mike, who at this time is just a string of codes, to go inside a human and come to life. Now Mike has a brain and a heart and everything a normal human has. He is in trouble with Kaine though because he ran away and Kaine is mad at him. Kaine wants to make everyone immortal, but he is not doing it for the right reason and this could be a very bad thing. CHARACTERIZATION: Michael is the main character in this book. He is only a set of binary codes in a programmed world, but a more intelligent program named Kaine. Kaine is an interesting character even though the author only talks about him a small handful of times. He is a program just like michael, yet has an enormous impact on the Sleep and on the real world. He is extremely smart which doesn鈥檛 make sense, because he does not have a brain. Sarah is the third and final main character. She is very nice, but can be stubborn and does hold back from what she has to say. SETTING: This book takes place very far into the future, but there is no set dates. It is key to the story that it is in the future because the people have technology like radios and halograms built into them. It also does not take place in a certain spot in the world, but they do move around a lot. This is a key part because they are always on the run from Kaine. The setting could also be considered to be in the Sleep and in the Wake. RECOMMENDATION: I would recommend this book to upperclassmen because the book is difficult to follow. It has a broad vocabulary. I also feel males would be more interested in this book than females, because the main characters and narrator are males. ...more |

It was able to do this even PERSONAL RESPONSE: I enjoyed reading this book because it was different and was able to keep you on the edge of your seat. It was able to do this even though it was so short and simple. The book was only 99 pages with a few pictures and not many words per page so it was a very quick read. The author keeps it at an older readers maturity even though the lexile is so low. It talks about him being tortured and killing and drugs. PLOT: The plot of this story is about Sergeant Edgar Brighton鈥檚 attempt to find the location of a mexican drug cartel. He was supposed to parachute down into a group of Colombian officers who were supposed to help him in his mission. When he got to his area, he was met by people from the drug cartel. They tased him and knocked him unconscious. They brought him into a warehouse and water boarded him. They eventually told him they were going to beat him with a baton. He escaped by using a pen cap to unlock the cuffs. He escaped by distracting the guards and then cuffing them and stealing their weapons. Instead of leaving the camp he decided to finish his mission before leaving. He did a good job and the U.S. took down the base. CHARACTERIZATION: Sergeant Edgar Brighton is the main character in this book. He is the soldier that is supposed to locate the base for the drug cartel. The problem is, it doubles as the military base and torture area. He is taken there under his will but now his mission is to find out where he is, get out alive, and report back. There was another character that was particularly important. She was the torture woman. Her main role is trying to get information out of the soldier and she causes him a lot of pain and is a highly ranked person in the drug cartel. SETTING: This book takes place in the South American jungles. It is not sure exactly where, but said to be near the border of Brazil. It is during the summer of 2006. The setting is important because the whole story revolves around the soldier trying to find out where the military base is inside the jungle. RECOMMENDATION: I would recommend this book to boys that are young but also mature. The reason for that is because the book is very low lexile so it is an extremely easy read. The reason I think it is for mature people is because it talks about killing, drugs, and fairly extensive about torture. ...more |

PLOT This play starts in Scotland after a big battle against the Irish. At the same time this is happening the Thane of Cawdor is told to be a traitor. The king of Scotland, Duncan, orders him to death. Duncan sees a great opportunity and makes Macbeth a Thane because of his great courage in battle. After this, Macbeth comes along three witches. They tell him that he is soon to be the king of Scotland. Macbeth is at the king鈥檚 house and hears that he wants his son Malcom to be the next king, Macbeth cheers and gives praise but thinks to himself that now he stands in between him and the crown. This part is very ambitious of Macbeth, even though during these times ambition is frowned upon. While he is thinking about him becoming a king, he realizes to become the king, he might need to kill Duncan. He is very skeptical of committing the murder. Duncan is to come to their house for dinner that night and he plans on killing him but doesn鈥檛 want to. Lady Macbeth talks him into it and he stabs him and then kills his guards. He makes it look like the guards killed Duncan and that he killed the guards. Banquo is very suspicious about Macbeth because he knows what the witches said to him and then soon after that King Duncan dies in his house and Macbeth becomes king. Macbeth hires two murderers to kill Banquo. After they kill Banquo and his son Fleance flees, Lady Macbeth sees that Macbeth is becoming calloused to death and murder. He sees it as, what does one more person dead hurt? After this happens, Lady Macbeth is so guilty about all of the murders that she walks in her sleep and thinks she is washing blood off her hands. Macbeth has the same problem, during dinner, he sees Banquo鈥檚 ghost in his chair and is screaming at him in front of everyone. Also, during this whole time, Macbeth鈥檚 leadership skills for Scotland are awful and he is leading them down for the country鈥檚 end. Everyone is starting to realize that they need to get rid of him too. People are really starting to realize that Macbeth is a bad person and a bad leader. There is a prophecy that states that Macbeth is not able to be killed by anyone born woman. Macduff draws his sword on Macbeth and then tells him that he is born of a C-section, which means he is able to kill Macbeth. He kills him and Malcom is to take the crown. MY RESPONSE I was not a huge fan of this play but I thought it was a decent story and had a pretty good plot. The setting was interesting and it showed good messages like ambition and appearance vs. reality. CHARACTERIZATION Macbeth- Macbeth is the main character and kills Duncan for his own ambition to become king. He is not a good person or a good leader and people start out liking him but everyone ends up wanting him dead. Lady Macbeth- Macbeth鈥檚 wife. She accompanies him throughout all the good and bad that happens in the story. She convinces Macbeth to kill Duncan and helped him think of the plan. Malcom- Malcom kills Macbeth because he is born through a C-section, which is the only way a human would be able to kill him. Duncan- Duncan was the previous king of Scotland before Macbeth killed him to take over the reign. RECOMMENDATION I would recommend this book to high schoolers because the Old English can be somewhat difficult to read and comprehend at a young age. Most schools around our area read it for their sophomore year in high school english class. ...more |

Although his team is not that great he leads them to a winning season. As they near the end of the season, he realizes that the varsity head coach is scouting him for a possible spot on the varsity roster. He has four other running backs that he needs to pass to be the starter. He knows for sure that he can beat the first two. He does that within a few weeks of summer practice. He passes the third one a week before the season starts but he is having trouble catching up to draeger, the starter. Draeger has size and strength and experience to his advantage so it will be hard to catch him. Once they make it to the first round of the playoffs, the quarterback and Draeger get suspended for a drinking party. This makes Mick the starter for the game. He has a pretty decent game but ends up getting stuffed at the one yard line for the winning touchdown. As he works out in the summer he realizes he should work out where his dad gets a free membership and he gets a personal trainer that pushes him hard and makes him work. This personal trainer pressures him with steroids. At first he says no but then gives in so he can be the best and not get stuffed at the one yard line. These steroids are a pill that you take and they give you bacne. After the a while you can stop taking the steroids and use a different pill to help flush out the steroids. Mick decides he doesn鈥檛 want to have to wait and lose to weeks of his working out. So he decides to go on a stack, which is the injection type of steroid. Now Mick is really getting strong fast. Once football season starts they take his measurables and he blows last years away. He is way more athletic and the coaches notice and one of them even thinks he is on steroids. Later, after the championship game is won, Drew finds Mick鈥檚 steroids. Drew decides it is best to tell the coach and when he tells Mick that, Mick tries to shoot himself but misses and only damages his side of his head. He has to go through a drug rehab program and won鈥檛 get any big consequences. He will even be allowed to take part in next year's season. MY RESPONSE I thought this was a great book. I liked how it was about a high school running back because that is what I am so it relates to me. I also thought it was interesting because the football season was a lot like mine. He is in 8th grade and gets a spot on varsity doing kick returns and special teams and then sophomore year they get a new coaching staff and he is the starting running back. That is when it starts to get different from my life. He starts taking the steroids and pushes all his friends away. It was interesting though, to see what he went through and how his life was only about working out and football, and the base of those two things was steroids. CHARACTERIZATION Mick- Mick is the main character in this book. He starts off when he is 4 years old and his dad is trying to teach him how to be a running back. He usually gets stopped by his dad but finally he gets by him one time and he is excited. His dad keeps working with him so he can reach his potential. He ends up being great but uses steroids to become even better. He is one of the best running backs in the state but ends up getting caught using steroids by his friend, Drew Drew- Drew is the quarterback of the team. He is great at what he does and starts off as Mick's best friend. Mick eventually distances himself from all his friends so he can focus on working out and football. RECOMMENDATION I would recommend this book to 8th grade through senior year boys that love football. It takes place mainly 8th grade through junior year but a senior would enjoy this book also. It is mainly about a football star who becomes even more of a star by using steroids and gets caught after winning the state championship. It shows how he went through most of his high school so you can see how he felt and thought. ...more |

The Packers have one of the richest histories in all of professional sports; they have won the most championships. Although he was a record-setting player in high school, the colleges with the best football programs thought that he was too small to play. He did not get any college scholarships. He played at a small college near his hometown called Butte Community College. After his freshman year, coaches at the University of California Berkeley took Rodgers in. After his junior year of college, Rodgers decided he was ready to leave college to try to join the NFL. Rodgers finally became the starting quarterback for the Packers in 2008. PERSONAL RESPONSE I really enjoyed this book. Football is my favorite sport so this book interested me. Although, I do wish it was a little longer and had more information. I enjoyed that it was an easy read, and it kept me interested throughout the whole book. CHARACTERIZATION Aaron Rodgers was born in Chico, California on December 2, 1983. Rodgers was a strong, determined individual. He always gave his best effort even when colleges would not take him. He knew he could make it, so he did. RECOMMENDATION I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys watching or playing football, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the Green Bay Packers. This book was an easy read so I would recommend it to both guys and girls in 4th grade and older. ...more |

PERSONAL RESPONSE: I enjoyed this book a lot. I related to it so well because all of the characters were in high school. It really made me appreciate PERSONAL RESPONSE: I enjoyed this book a lot. I related to it so well because all of the characters were in high school. It really made me appreciate how good we have it at our school. I felt really bad for Charlie, though. He went through so much throughout his first year of high school. PLOT: Charlie, a freshman in high school, started writing journals to an unknown person about his life. Charlie had an extremely hard time fitting in at school. In these journals, Charlie discussed his first year of high school, along with the two traumatic events that happened in his past: the suicide of his friend, Michael, and the death of his Aunt Helen. While he was trying to cope with all of these troubles, Charlie met two seniors, Sam and Patrick, who later became his best friends. Sam and Patrick make his first year of high school a little easier and one to never forget. As the school year came to an end, Charlie got very anxious about his friends leaving, especially Sam, who he developed a crush on earlier in the year. CHARACTERIZATION: In the beginning of the book, Charlie was a very shy, sensitive guy. He had a hard time fitting in and making friends. Toward the end of the book, he started to come out of his shell. He started talking to more people at school and began to express himself more. Sam, Charlie鈥檚 crush, was a very outgoing, strong-headed girl. She always told people what was on her mind. If something was bothering her, she said something. Patrick, Charlie鈥檚 best friend, was a very open guy. He did not care what people had to say about him, and he did not care about the opinions of others. RECOMMENDATION: I would strongly recommend this book to women in high school. I would not recommend it to anyone older than high school because I feel like they would not enjoy it as much. I do not think they would enjoy it as much because they would not relate to the book as much as a high schooler might. Also, I would not recommend this book to any guys because it is more geared towards girls. It has more feminine characteristics than male characteristics. I feel it would not be interesting enough for them. I do not suggest this book to anyone younger than high school because there are a lot of adult scenes. I do not think that anyone younger is mature enough. ...more |
