I found the pace to be just right. Would make a great YA, or upper middle grade read. A few foul words. Overall, I think it deserves a space next to Homeless Bird and Chu Ju's House by Gloria Whelan (some of my favorite works). I appreciated how Sungju Lee shared how confusion at how life really was for North Koreans outside this bubble of a city once he had been cast out from his utopia. He also showed that his beliefs weren't shattered all at once but over time when something else was shown to be propaganda. The author gives a realistic look at life but doesn't paint every detail. Its like saying "I went to the bathroom" without giving a play by play of all that it entailed. He did it well and I appreciate how we could understand it was awful without all the details.
I would recommend! It isn't such an outdated work but was only a decade or so ago. ...more

I didn't know iIf you enjoy Love Comes Softly and Magic of Ordinary Days, you may want to pick this book up. I entered this read with some hesitancy. I didn't know if I was really in the mood for another Christian romance novel where the beautiful damsel has two, or more, dashing men waiting to swoop in and marry her. I expect this to be the case with a bit of God sprinkling in, and the climax of finally praying for God and the right man to plop in her lap.
It didn't exactly go that way. LOL. Our main female character yearns for adventure and the love of her life to take her away from her mundane life. However, he is soon called off to fight as an aviator for WW1, and she is sent to help her very sick aunt who has the dreaded Spanish Flu. Things go topsy turvey for Rebekah and soon she is the sole caregiver for 4 children while their father is off fighting the war. Rebekah has a lot of growing up to do and she is helped on by the lovely townspeople.
Cast of characters that will add so much to the story. It was a sweet read and one I did end up enjoying! Like I opened with, if you enjoy the Love Comes Softly book as well as Magic of Ordinary days, this felt like a good mash up. ...more

DNF'd at chapter 2. We had ch 1 talking about how parenthood changes our routine and how we can embrace it or become bitter about it and what God would want of us. Beginning of Ch 2 basically goes into more of the same concepts, our life is not as it once was due to the new demands on us that children bring, ( really, Sherlock??? ) and i just know at this point I'm not going to take anything away from this. Supposedly this is a good book if you were kind of let down about becoming a parent and it didn't give you all the thrills you expected. Been a parent for almost 17 years now. I don't think this would help me on the right track of holiness and parenting....more

I wanted to like Wordsworth poetry but there was only one poem in this little edition that I actually enjoyed and copied down to work on memorizing. Not all poetry is for memorizing. Some is for reflection, a soft hug, a song against injustice, a love letter, etc. Wordsworth seemed to have a bit of everything which theoretically would mean there would be something in here for everyone, and I guess to a certain extent there was for me. However, I do not think I will be pursuing any more of his poems. I am not sure I'm cut out to read poetry. ...more
Yes! Another great Christie with enough clues to figure it out, enough red herrings to doubt, and heroine that you want to strangle.

Enjoyed! After messing up on my last one and changing my suspect to another, this time I worked out why I thought it was this person and stuck by it, and was correct. That is a good mystery!...more

5 stars because this is my comfort book. If I'm having a hard time with myself or life circumstances, I tend to gravitate toward this read. It's a Chr5 stars because this is my comfort book. If I'm having a hard time with myself or life circumstances, I tend to gravitate toward this read. It's a Christian romance, but it is so much more.
Sophie is the person I want to be. Her patience and understanding, her faith, it's all precious and inspiring.
It's a lighter read and I always finish it within a day or two. But I always walk away feeling refreshed....more
