Hauskasti, mutta samaan aikaan kumman vakavasti....more

There were times I couldn't stop reading even though it was breaking my heart. Stridsberg tells a semifictional story of Valerie Solanas, a radical feminist and the shooter of Andy Warhol. From an abused child to a lonely genius to a mentally ill wreck of a human. The story consists of time shifts, dialogue, dream like sequences and uses a lot of repetition but it's still somehow easy to read. Even though it forces the reader to create part of the story herself. ...more

Sus is a 19-year-old girl (so small she looks like 12) who is plotting revenge. She is so alone, so angry, so in need of love and compassion that it's almost clear from the start that there will be no happy end for her. I was so happy to find that Bengtsson doesn't show readers how or if her story ends. He merely shows what life can be when violence and fear have been present all your life.
It's a dark pageturner where you're served small shots of happiness when something goes in the right direction with Sus or she makes a good decision. In the end, you'll still feel anxious, though.

I just love how Renberg builds a story and how he uses words. His empathy for his characters and the way he sees through everyone and manages to show everyone's feelings and all those lovable and despicable things we all have inside ourselves. The strange relationship between the new protagonists Rikki and Ben is a powerful depiction of brotherhood and the abuse of power, the development of Rudi and Cecilie was one of the most endearing thing to read and Daniel, oh Daniel, the brooding beautiful dangerous Daniel, you have got to be the main character in the next book.
Just like the first book of the series, this had the most amazing dialogue and oh how I love that looming feeling of doom, not knowing who gets hurt or who fucks up. Both books are highly entertaining, really funny, heartbreakingly sad and in a weird way, humane and kind in a way that speaks to me. Even though everything is so damn hard for everyone involved....more

Where there's Beautiful, infuriating and sad, Gulliksen tells a story of a marriage that is like (I assume) all the marriages: different from others. Where there's space, freedom, sex, openness, tenderness and love. And yet the man seems to be cursed or what else could be the reason that he constantly dooms the relationship to fail? And then it does.
I liked the structure of the novel which was the man telling his side of what happened. I'm not saying it wouldn't be interesting to here the other side but one-sidedness was an interesting choice. And man oh man, does it get sad at the end. When there's no more point in asking "why us?" or "how could you let it happen?" it just comes down to feelings and emotions which inevitably cool down. After that, to continue the relationship is to make a choice over and over again....more
