It’s about love and regret and longing, family and aging and in the background a look at a (future?) world made bleak by global warming. Charlie and Garrett have been friends since college and now Charlie is about to marry Cece at his beautiful lake home in Salish, Montana. Charlie a successful cardiac anaesthesiologist asks Garrett to look after Cece until he can arrive in Salish. They have not met before but for Garrett it is love at first sight, on a mad impulse he sends her an email on the eve of her wedding telling her how he feels. Charlie and Cece get married amidst the chaos of some of the wedding party and guest coming down with norovirus, but Cece leaves Charlie for Garrett. It’s a look at fractured love and how they try to mend the rift between the three of them. As they age and have families and reflect on their lives we see how the world also is growing darker and less stable. This will be one of my books of the year.

It’s on so many lists as top picks and the book buyer for the chain I work for has chosen it as one of her reads. Maybe that’s why I was a little bit underwhelmed with the book. Sure it’s beautifully written, heartfelt and tragic but it’s just how books used to be, almost Mills and Boon like. Star Crossed lovers marry other people but still love each other, and the big twist at the end was obvious from the start. Having said all that I will recommend it as it’s a lovely read with no swearing or graphic sex or anything offensive really which sometimes make books hard to recommend . Beth and Gabrielle have been sweethearts since college but when Beth thinks he has been cheating on her she breaks up with him. Enter Frank, the local farm boy who has loved her since he was 13. They marry and life is great until the death of their son Bobby in an accident on the farm. Along with Franks brother Jimmy, they soldier on as it’s all they can do. A few years later Gabrielle returns to his hometown with his young son Leo. Gabrielle and his wife are separated and he has Leo for a while. He asks Beth to mind Leo for him and soon they rekindle their romance. I won’t say any more as it will give too much of the story away but I will say someone is soon dead, and a trial ensues.

I was very impressed with the first in the series Wake and this, the third Lane Holland outing is just as good. Lane a former Private eye is in jail for murdering his father. (Read Wake and Ripper to appreciate the backstory here). One unsolved case haunts him, the disappearance of Matilda Carver 20 years ago, who also happens to be the daughter of the Governor of the prison Lane is incarcerated in. He has carried on covertly looking into Matilda’s disappearance while inside and comes to the conclusion that Karpathy Farm, a remote, commune like farm is at the centre of not just Matilda’s disappearance but others as well. He does a deal to go to the farm, with an escort, under the pretence of an outreach program for offenders who want to learn about farming. It’s a really good read with a few twists and intriguing characters.
