With dual timelines, one in current time and one in the 1800's, I enjoyed the earlier one (Mari's) better. Actually, I think it would have made a better book just focusing on that timeframe and storyline. So, while a lot of the book was just ok and predictable, there were a few standout moments. Be sure to see the two recipes at the end of the book, Limoncello Spritz ...more

Set in July 1982 in rural Indiana, this collection is like a sampling of the entire community. The separate stories are connected subtly, with loneliness, secrets, and a town that sometimes seems too confining. There is more clarity the further you read and there is a depth to each story, if you think about what is happening behind the scenes. Rounded up from a 3.5....more

I agree with her that the message is timeless, but I think the book could have been shortened somewhat. The story became frustrating for me, because unlike Eunice Hudson (one of the main characters in the book), I did not have charitable thoughts. The story is described as being about relationships, the church, and God's call on people's lives. I would also have to say that it is about being humble, selfless and how to minister to people in need. ...more

It's a lot about the music industry and the 70's culture, written in an oral history & interview style which made it a fast and easy read, but it just seemed superficial. Basically, everyone telling their side of the story, with a few good moments and quotes. So, for me, an easy read but not significant....more

Robbins covers a lot of scenarios where the "Let Them" theory comes into play. Do we try to resolve or just accept life's many challenges? I am "a fixer" so I do need to be reminded every now and then about balancing my energy on what really matters. Life is messy but most of all it is about how we handle the messes. There were some good points brought up and while the author's theory is certainly nothing new, she does offer some insight and guidance. Take from it what you find is helpful. ...more

The writing is superb, especially describing Shanghai and she created such realistic characters. I loved the Chinese proverb mentioned in the book, "An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle but will never break." Recommended for anyone that enjoys family fiction. ...more
