I've been trying to get through this for months and I think it's time to accept I'm just not that into it. The first book I thought was promising but the way this one is split up has made me realize that the only character I even mildly care about is Gabriel and even then unfortunately he's no Mia Corvere and this series is no Nevernight. Maybe I'll feel the urge to come back to it later but for now I'm just not into it enough for how ridiculously long these are. ...more

Most people seemed to really like this one so don't put too much stock in my review. I thought about rounding this up to 3 stars but I was so bored with it that I ended up skimming at least half of it and my general rule is that when I start skimming it gets an automatic 2 stars. There's nothing technically 'wrong' with this, it's well written in that there are not a lot of glaring grammatical errors and the pacing and structure is decent, but I just found all the characters to be incredibly two dimensional and never really connected with any of them and unfortunately that will make or break a book for me. The first few chapters were promising but to me they just never really developed to an extent that would make me care about what happened to them. ...more
Gonna give this one a 2.5 rounded up to a 3 because there isn't really anything technically wrong with it, I'm just still not interested in iDNF @ 45%
Gonna give this one a 2.5 rounded up to a 3 because there isn't really anything technically wrong with it, I'm just still not interested in it almost halfway through. Basically I got sucked in by the whole 'horror book set in the 90s with the title of a Nine Inch Nails song' thing and unfortunately for me this isn't really delivering on the 90s nostalgia the way I want it to and also the actual plot isn't interesting enough for me to stick around for that either.
If you're just really into mermaids you might like this but for me it jumps around too much and didn't really do anything to make me care about any of the characters and the only thing that even really dates it to the 90s is that they'll randomly mention a song playing on the radio or a type of technology that would be considered outdated today. Probably a fine read if you're just looking for a run-of-the-mill horror book but I was hoping for something that leaned a bit more towards My Best Friend's Exorcism with the nostalgia factor....more

Really enjoyed this one! I'm a sucker for books with two different timelines that slowly become more and more connected over time and I thought this one did a really good job of keeping up the suspense in both the past and present and enjoyed a bit of a different take on the supernatural creatures. Really liked all the characters and the ending as well. ...more

Got about halfway through and realized that I neither knew nor cared what was going on and decided to just flip through the rest to look at the art. Not sure if this would have benefitted from being shorter or maybe having fewer characters but I felt like I was getting whiplash with how much it skipped around and kept throwing in new people and plot points. ...more

This was pretty cute and I absolutely love Bunnicula but I just don't think the graphic novel aspect really added much to the story. The art style and page layouts are all pretty basic and for some reason the artist absolutely cannot draw Chester's face at all. Seriously it's just like ok here's a regular dog face and a regular rabbit face and then for some reason the cat looks like Vladislav in that one scene from What We Do in the Shadows. Absolutely baffling. Still, it would be a good substitute for kids who are more likely to read a graphic novel than a book since it follows the original basically to the letter....more

I think I'm just too asexual to read this book and I genuinely can't tell if the main character is supposed to be as annoying as he is or if the author actually thinks this POV is charming. Honorable mention to the several times he assures us that he will absolutely go down on a woman #thisiswhatafeministlookslike lmao. Truly thought I could get through it just by laughing at how pretentious and ridiculous it is but I'm out!...more

William, SachMoving Pictures aside, I think the Industrial Revolution series is one of my favorite Discworld miniseries and this was such a fun read. William, Sacharissa, and Otto were such fun characters and I wish we had another book focusing on them [although I'm very glad that the fandom just took one look at them and went yeah, they're definitely a thruple. Much better option that Pratchett's usual 'well he's the main male character and she's the only woman in the book so obviously they end up together' style of romance]. Also liked that Vimes was portrayed as such a jerk in this because I honestly think he comes off as a jerk a lot of the time in his OWN books even though I love him but it's still nice to see him from someone else's point of view like this. And of course I'm always here for the Vetinari cameos. Overall just a really fun read. ...more

Can definitely see why this is a lot of people's favorite Discworld series and I absolutely love Vimes and Vetinari - they're probably my favorite characters besides Moist - but I also think a lot of the things the officers do throughout the series haven't necessarily aged well in a lot of ways. But I recognize that most of these books were written quite a while ago and also that the message of a lot of these books is very explicitly acceptance of people from different cultures so I can't really blame him for some of the other stuff that was more a product of its time. ...more
