Thank you, Noelle, for bringing the shitshow that was 2020 to an end with this delightful book. Yes, I even had to bust out the italics for this one. I was so charmed by Arabella, Mr. Beaumaris, and Ulysses. Ulysses is a dog btw. Love a man who names his pet after a Greek hero. My cat Achilles says hello.
Late contender for one of my favorite books of 2020! Thanks, Noelle! Read her review here. ...more

I had a white coworker once ask me if all Koreans were rich. And this was years before Crazy Rich Asians. She was completely serious too. This book, about an undocumented Korean immigrant who has to struggle and work day in and day out, is worth reading for that perspective alone.
Very promising, if a little uneven, debut. Really excited to see what Nancy Jooyoun Kim writes next....more

I wanted to read this before reading Kevin Kwan's Sex and Vanity, which is an homage to this book, and I was pleasantly surprised. It's a short book so there wasn't as much character and plot development as I wanted, but I ended up liking it overall. A perfect summer read, especially when we're all stuck at home dreaming of Italian villas. Very interested to read Kevin Kwan's take on this story. ...more

Catalina's heartbreak and feelings of betrayal after ... one date? Was there even a date?? I finished this back in August and I'm still annoyed. If you need an escape from COVID, this isn't the book for you. But if you're like me and watched Contagion 3x at the start of quarantine, add this to your reading list along with some Octavia Butler. ...more

TWENTY. YEARS. IN. THE. MAKING.
Is a long damn time. Was it worth it? Absofuckinglutely. I reread the entire series -- and surprisingly even enjoyed The Thief this time around too, which was NOT the case when I first read it 10 years ago -- and remembered again what makes Megan Whalen Turner's writing and characters so special and superior.
I teared up even reading the dedication: "To Sounis."
But -- and this was my complaint in another long-running series whose name I can't remember bc 2020 -- the addition of a new character/narrator took away time/development I wish was spent with our core of Sounis, Eddis, and Attolia. Don't get me wrong, Pheris was a great character but it was a lot of Pheris and not enough Sounis.
