4.5 stars. Roth's prose is so ingenious, so full of wit and charisma, that I don't think there's a boring sentence in this novel. There is a sardonic, darkly humorous quality to the prose that kept me enchanted--I repeatedly laughed out loud at Roth's sharp turn of phrase and the comedic situations he puts his main character in--but there is also an elegiac sadness underlying the narrative that becomes gradually more perceptible as the story progresses and you learn more about Mickey Sabbath. However, the only thing preventing me from awarding this novel a full five stars is the length of time you spend with Mickey Sabbath. My hardcover edition of the novel was about 450 pages, but these were big pages and Roth frequently writes multi-page paragraphs. The book feels longer than it is. Towards the end of the book, although I did pity Sabbath, I grew to find him more and more execrable as a character. He was never a paragon of moral virtue to begin with, but, after 350 or so pages of his cynicism, devious justifications of his actions, and refusal to acknowledge his faults and attempt to change, he becomes quite irritating. Perhaps I would have given the novel 5 stars if it had been a tad bit shorter. This is totally a matter of personal preference, though; I can easily see how one could be enthralled by Sabbath's Theater from beginning to end. I read this novel after finishing Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee, so perhaps I just overindulged in stories about dirty old men without the the proper refractory period.
