Best Geronimo Christmas book I've read so far. I realised halfway through that I have a hardback special edition Christmas Geronimo book so I actually still have 2 left to read. I noticed that there are some reindeer which are females and yet they have antlers when I'm pretty certain they shouldn't. Shows lack of research on the author's behalf, and the editor too tbh The fact that most of the story was a dream and about 15 pages are fun Christmas activities rather than the continuation of the tale did take the edge off ngl
Stilton's grandfather pranked him by making him miss Christmas Eve lunch or dinner with all his family and friends by stressing him out unnecessarily over work, wtf. Geronimo is a guy who could basically get revenge on anybody he desires as they've all somehow done him wrong. Once again, the moral here is that it doesn't have to be Christmas to spend more time with the family. Also something that grinds my gears, that absolutely pisses me off, how he refers to his nephew as his favourite, his aunt too. What about the rest of his nephews and aunts? They aren't even mentioned. I think that's discriminatory and vile.
One more thing. What does Stilton have to lose if his grandfather returns to the company? He's already filthy rich and doesn't particularly need his job other than to maintain his reputation which wouldn't be so easy to do if he's fired rather than if he resigns. He could resign regardless despite all the people depending on him, he could appoint a new leader. Why he doesn't do that is beyond me. That's why this series always seems to follow the same pattern, it's rooted to the spot. In other news, 2 more books to go!...more

He'Never realised how pessimistic Geronimo truly is, and one can't really blame him either considering how most of the time, things go wrong for him. He's like the mouse version of wimpy kid, sucking up to everybody and meeting their demands, not arguing, and accepting everything that comes his way. The Benjamin initials section had me dying of laughter. Guess that part was lost in translation or the author just thought that kids wouldn't realise. It's way more structured than the previous Stilton book I read and has more of a Christmas Spirit tone but still, not enough to help me enter it. 2 more to go :)
Stilton too is made of money and him acting all humble doesn't help. Trap is still one of my least favourite characters but he sure was a great help in this one. So was Thea. The Christmas Eve dinner was a success even after all the tragedies that befell the main character. I suppose the moral of this tale is that giving and being present is more important than receiving presents. Also to think of those who are less fortunate, but that could be said of any time of the year haha...more

I still have mixed feelings about this. Shinkai is truly great with writing characters, especially female ones in my opinion. It takes even greater talent however to write from the perspective of a cat or a dog. He does know cats way better than dogs however, that much is evident :) Pets and especially taking in strays could really make us fill that hole which drives us away from pursuing all that life has to offer. This was gentle, soothing but also sad, sentimental. It was rather difficult to keep up with which characters were animals and which were humans because of the Japanese names and many sound alike though animals tend to have names which resemble adjectives rather than nouns.
A quick and simple read, I feel as though this would have been better had fewer characters been involved. Yes, even despite how they all in some way or other intertwine. Both animals and humans btw haha The travelling cat chronicles for instance did this very well but not placing much importance on the side characters but within this one, all characters somehow became main characters at some point. The idea of there being more than 1 generation of cats was fantastic and wholesome to say the least. At the end of the day however, animals may communicate between themselves using their own language but there will never be a way to completely teach them ours so that they could replicate it I suppose, even if in every book about cats I've read, they seem to understand English lol This too goes for all species across the galaxy btw
This one went through all the motions, suffering, feeling at ease, giving birth, having elderly parents with psychological and physical issues, being abandoned, depression, and love. Good read but seems generic in some aspects like narration and world development. In terms of style and flow, I think it read well, the alternating point of view between human and cat or kitten worked brilliantly and was hardly confusing after about 20 pages. The illustrations in black and white were very detailed and sweet, great touch to the story :)...more

Instead, I endeI usually love these but this didn't hit the mark. I went in with different expectations, hoping the Christmas spirit would summon me. Instead, I ended up reading about a mouse who broke all his bones a few months before Christmas after a tragic accident. It's a book for kids but it shouldn't have been so light hearted and so unrealistic despite the useful information about hospitals and skiing. Also Trap has to be my least favourite character, he's disrespectful, obnoxious, and a walking red flag. I wouldn't have forgiven someone who broke my entire body so easily either, I don't care as to how quickly mice heal. I'd have wanted vengeance, a hearing in court, a prison sentence, anything to get the rude brat out the way of innocent citizens and bystanders.
All Geronimo wanted to do was something lovely for his nephew until all his family and friends barged in, took advantage of his wealth and made fun of him when he got hurt. Insensitive af. The message was that laughter is the best medicine yet the jokes were pathetic and would have made me feel further pain rather than help me heal quicker. Somehow still always nostalgic despite of the story and its premise. I look forward to reading the actual Geronimo Christmas tales. This took me less than an hour to get through haha...more

I only give this one 2 stars because of the translation quality despite the topics discussed. Baek went through much that I can't relate with, like going to therapy during difficult times rather than doing some exercise instead of wasting her money, and caring too much as to what others thought of her, despite being judgemental. She doesn't do anything stimulating in her life and wonders why she's constantly mildly depressed. Women, hahaha
She brings in way too many elements and instead of elaborating or bunching them up in chapters, she contributes to many pages being left blank and therefore wasted. I only read this to completion because of how much I paid for it. Baek whines, complains, and wastes her time going to therapy which is a job I have absolutely no respect for. Besides, the rice cakes weren't even mentioned much, her eating disorders included alcohol and sweets. Very disappointed, I went into this one blindly btw Had no clue what to expect. The first surprise was that it was a memoir, the next was that it gave the impression that it was bound to be relatable but I perhaps read it at the wrong time. Not intending to read it again anytime soon anyway lol...more

The strongest under the heavens competition, won by the turtle hermit and the introduction of the red ribbon army who too are in search of the dragon balls was an exciting journey. It's a shame I have to wait until Christmas to find out what happens next haha Goku never disappoints and he's extremely impressive especially when taking damage, he's more resistant than vibranium. There's a lot of clear inspiration to other manga series in this volume, Naruto, one punch man, one piece. Even if just an idea, I'm sure it sparked all the respective authors needed to get going :) Thank you Toriyama sensei. This one was less perverted than its predecessor which I'm not sure whether I should complain about or not haha
Goku and Kuririn did take their training seriously and it shows in how well they fare in the tournament. I strive to be as strong as Goku and have as much of a healthy appetite as he does nowadays. The kamehameha never ceases to amaze. Goku mastered way more than his master did in 10 years in just a few months. I still don't much know about the background of Goku. Why he's not human, how he was born, and where. What he really is and such other trivialities. The tail and him becoming Godzilla with every full moon led the turtle hermit to destroy the moon altogether. So now, we have a storyline without a moon that's still taking place on Earth haha

It's insightful and factual despite being narrated like a story. Our regrets and how our legacies are shaped by those regrets. The footprints we leave behind. The true worth and nature of our lives. The narrative style is cool to where the author addresses us as though we're his son and he's sorry he couldn't be there since he was too busy chasing money, fame, and wealth. He did leave this behind in the end. It's emotional and sad, depressing even, though compelling how quickly one could change his mind about the way he treats people.
Cancer wasn't enough I suppose. His son did mean a lot to him but he wasn't there for him because he left home. The suicidal thoughts. The figure of lady death in the background. Images which one wouldn't expect in a book entitled the deal of a lifetime. Of course it's an open ended story. Quick read, great illustrations though not always necessary. Allegory of one's relevance in the world through footprints was brilliant. Some are too young to leave any behind, especially meaningful ones like he did. He was erased from history to save a little girl's life which was beautiful. He went that far, he did that which he never managed to do for his son for a girl he barely knew. The fact that he'd lost all his loved ones, mostly family, didn't much help with the Christmas spirit I thought this book would ease me into. ...more

This is the Shakespeare play that has mostly helped me to appreciate the 16th century author. It was a slow read, with footnotes to explain terms which are archaic. Shakespeare has a way with building tension and then bringing all the characters together to participate in a blood bath. I've had to write many essays regarding this play and I can't say it wasn't a pleasure because I learned much more about this legendary author. Since it's an old play, various phrases, despite the explanations, went over my head but I simultaneously don't think that Shakespeare always had in mind such imagery. His tragedies do however always seem to follow a similar pattern, Othello for instance, Macbeth, and even Romeo and Juliet. Those are somewhat more boring in my opinion. Goneril and Regan should have been depicted as way worse and they weren't given enough credit for their horrible nature. Edmund however was.
Treachery and nature play a huge role but so does character development in how characters which start off as plain and dull become ruthless and desperate for power. Lear's daughters mainly, all but Cordelia of course. The ending was terrible in the sense that it broke my heart and I didn't much expect that Lear would die from grief. The deaths are very sudden and that's perhaps the reason why I should watch these plays rather than read them one of these days haha It was a pleasant university read ngl and I look forward to acquainting myself further with the works of William. It's a shame that lecturers spoil so much of the fun prior to giving us time to read the materials used in class and I couldn't completely go into this one blindly having much prior knowledge of the style used and the characters. It shed more light on what I didn't already know I guess......more

It was quite different from the rest of the series in the sense that this one was still from Greg's perspective but Rodrick had more autonomy than his younger brother. Which begs the question, how close are Greg and Rodrick realistically? Is Greg just making all this up? Why doesn't Rodrick succeed even when he's recommending great ideas and trying his best? Is Greg jealous?
Rodrick's band is pretty cool but took a woman and a letter from a lawyer for it to disband. The band Rodrick looks up to however, did get the opportunity to make it big for a second time in their careers towards the end of the book. It was very quick paced and spanned over months unlike other books in this series which spanned a week or just a few days. I still need to catch up with volumes 15 and 16 but so far 1 to 14 weren't the same as they were when I was younger and read them for the first time. 17 wasn't either. To me it just seems that Kinney keeps pumping out these books for the money and is hardly trying to make them funny anymore. They took rather a serious tone and nothing ever pans out for either Greg or Rodrick. It was a relief not to have to read about Susan, Frank or Manny in this volume because they are unbearable.
To be fair, Susan did show a shred of support for Rodrick's band but she did it at a most inconvenient time. I have certain queries about the whereabouts of the ice cream van and the monkey hand stuck to one of the character's foot. Who did the van actually belong to, I'd say it was meant to be Rodrick's. The monkey hand could have easily been removed if the pant leg was cut but I guess it never was. Just goes to show the low iq of the band members. Well, all but perhaps Rodrick who at least tried and was present. He deserves more respect.

Not much even happened wtf Charlie admitted that he loves Nick and Nick finally came out to his dad and they made up after an outburst. Is this series really popular because so many characters are homosexual or trans? I mean the characters aren't much delved into and they're all written in a very peripheral way, even Charlie and Nick. This almost felt as though Oseman is afraid to thread on any toes within the lgbt community.
Yes, it's sweet but all the kissing, hugging, and making out is too repetitive and isn't a turn off because it's gay but because it's so overused. It's as though Oseman uses the same romantic gestures as a filler or when she's run out of ideas, which she has, since about the middle section of book 2. I wouldn't necessarily say it's not my cup of tea because I'm straight but rather since how boring the story and how average the art style are. I only read these 4 because I bought them for a great price and genuinely thought I'd enjoy them. Even the snippets at the end are nothing to be proud of since they resemble recycled material.
I didn't give it 1 star because of how quick and easy a read it is and how homophobia is tackled through the use of Nick's brother. It does come off as forced ngl but it puts the message across beautifully. Characters looking out for each other is a very sweet element and the sympathy is evident and fantastically expressed but, I swear, the cringe certain scenes portrayed was unbearable. I found myself rolling my eyes involuntarily way too much. Not sure whether I'll read volume 5 just to complete the series but I'm certainly not interested in Oseman's novellas....more

Arisu loses all his friends in a death match**spoiler alert** This is such an unsettling series, felt much like it did when watching the Truman show. Arisu loses all his friends in a death match for the 7 of hearts. He then makes his way to the beach which is a club that collects the entire deck to send at least someone back home. No face cards have yet however been discovered. He goes on to sacrifice a lot for a girl he respects called Usagi, his rank at the club and even prioritising her to leave first.
Arisu is betrayed and is now at risk of being murdered by a space laser. I love the uncertainty, it's an extremely cool concept not to know who is in fact, in charge of all these games. Having watched the first season on netflix, I know what's going to happen next but regardless, the story is told very well and netflix must have found it quite easy to adapt it into a live series. Aso does a great job at explaining the situations the characters are in and how even if they step a toe out of line, their lives could be at risk.
I love the art style but with regards to the writing, there are some phrases lost in translation and some typos which really destroy the flow as you try to ponder what Aso is trying to say and have to put the words in order. I enjoy how this series is just one huge mind fuck and how it makes one realise how precious life is and how one ought appreciate what he has and never seek too much. This is pretty much what I wrote in my review for the first book.
The beach is a formidable place to be and with the leader of the club having just been murdered, it's an even worse place to be than ever. At least with him around, there was the mere sense of comfort and order. Now who knows what this savage will contribute. For one thing, Arisu getting betrayed led him to getting put in a secluded room where he'll be killed by a laser in a day since that's when his visa expires. Also, Usagi getting raped or violated is not cool. Can't wait to read volume 3. Received this yesterday and finished it today from book depo, 16/11/2022 to 17/11/2022.

20/01/2025. the 7 of hearts game will never not traumatise me. It's pretty fascinating how quickly it all happened in the manga when in the show it was so evocative. One thing I don't understand is how nobody was able to find a deck of cards considering that there are stores all over the place and everything is free. That would have totally cracked the system. Chishiya betraying Arisu also hurt but Chishiya is definitely not one to be trusted despite being a character to constantly keep an eye on. The live action show really follows the manga well but there are some slight differences. The game with the bulb and the risk of everyone getting electrocuted excluded Arisu. Usagi deserves way better and Aguni and Niragi are absolute pieces of shit. Can't wait to read the rest since there's so much going on and Arisu is about to die lol I know precisely what's going to happen....more

Fenchurch is a likeable character altFord Prefect's character very much reminded me of Captain Jack Sparrow's, as portrayed by Johnny Depp of course. Fenchurch is a likeable character although I don't much understand her significance this late in the tale except that she's Arthur Dent's soulmate. I still think that of the sequels, the restaurant is the best and the most memorable. I don't remember much of life, the universe and everything for instance. This I suppose will be easier to remember because of its involvement with how reality and mental illness are often confused or abused to indoctrinate the masses.
SPOILER ALERT, I'm pretty sure that Marvin the Paranoid Android was killed off in the final few chapters. A shame since he's the most relatable character in the series so far and certainly my favourite. It is a very British book and just as we were led to believe that Arthur would return to a regular life back home in England, it's very much turned upside down. I truly appreciate Adams' creativity when giving us information of planets far away in the galaxy and those inhabiting them, both sentient or not, mostly the former type.
It read like a wimpy kid book in that so many points and facts were handed out at the beginning and then were slowly tied in the end with characters that weren't memorable at all and the sequence not always making sense. For instance, the message given to Earth by god, the very final one for that matter, was a dull and very sarcastic one which in a way suitable but also underwhelming considering that the entire story was meant to revolve around it. Arthur and Fenchurch flying was a cool aspect of the tale but even more so, the inside out house which contained the entire Earth, technically speaking, referred to as an asylum.
The dolphins and how they left isn't much delved into despite there being elements adapted by the movie. I miss Trillian and Zaphod Beeblebrox. They were mentioned briefly with unfortunately not much context assigned. Perhaps the most sensual hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy book so far, and sexual though everything is implied rather than imposed. Can't wait to finish reading the series :)

I love the bonus content but there really isn't a solid storyline is there? I love it when there's consistency and when characters the reader knows and loves pop up frequently but with this series they are all side lined and even Saitama isn't given all the spotlight. In the case of this volume, we're met with a new character called King, dubbed as the strongest man on Earth who is actually just a pussy.
Not much happened but for a secret or mysterious organisation who exposed him by sending monsters to get him and having one punch man defeating them for him. With the added content, we got Saitama and Genos defeating a gang who tried to destroy Bang's dojo and a cat chase. We are not reminded of the disaster that took place in the previous book yet there's not much evidence of a time jump, if at all since a hero fixed the problem in a week. City A is not mentioned and no more aliens are introduced. Just new characters like King who is in the s class who didn't add much to the story but a bunch of noise in the background due to his quickly beating heart.

Also the inclusion of a prophecy warning about the destruction of the planet as well as the introduction of many s class heroes. Aliens are fearsome opponents for the most part, at least when depicted in fiction, and one punch man is no exception. Saitama however defeats many of them while the rest take on a single villain. Considering that Saitama is in the b tier, this is hilarious.
Puri Puri Prisoner didn't show up much and I want more gay vibes. I thought he would especially since he's on both sides of the book, not to mention the spine. The telekinetic superhero Tatsumaki is a massive turn off though she's extremely useful in situations like this one where a massive space craft was involved and took out most of city A. The emergency meeting is definitely something new in a series like this and goes to show that the superhero organisation is in fact, well, organised. The leader of the gang never showed up so I guess it was a good idea that Saitama showed up. He doesn't get any credit :( His humility is almost out of this world.
The characters are becoming more ridiculous in the way they look and this volume almost gave me Junji Ito vibes. There isn't much continuity between chapters and that annoys me but it seems to be getting better. Saitama's disassociation from reality is pretty realistic for his character and the bonus story towards the end, which this time round dealt with suicide, was absolutely brilliant. Will certainly read on to see how this space battle ends, if it does. More of Genos and Puri Puri Prisoner pls and the old guy Bang or Silver Fang. Would be enough for me....more

Genos and Mumen rider are excellent characters and I wish I could see more of them. Bang doesn't show up in this one. Saitama gets promoted to class B after defeating the Deep Sea King. Also, what's up with Puri Puri Prisoner. He's a gay character and well done for the inclusion but where did he go, was he killed? We are never explicitly told about the deaths of either of the characters.
Genos is truly a great hero while Saitama decided to make his audience hate him to preserve the reputation of the hero society which was a pretty bold move and heroic in itself. Not much has happened so far and what I think is gratifying to see in such a manga is how little contents Denji since he actually lives in poverty, he's in a lot of debt. So much so that even some bread or a hug would make him happy. It's not everyday that we see a character be glad about and appreciate the smallest of things. Not to say that Denji has no ambitions but none as big as Naruto's or Luffy's for that matter hahaha It was a great read, a page turner in fact, and I would consider reading further. Pochita is after all the cutest thing in existence.

The first volume has elements from tokyo ghoul and even one punch man. James went through a lot of bullying and hassling, poverty and suffering as well as had to deal with family issues but he managed to resolve these with the proper mindset and with Bob by his side, encouraging him to never give up, much like a guardian angel or a good omen.
He's a great author and says things the way they are, no sugar coating, which is something I appreciated about Bowen's writing style. London isn't that easy a place to become successful through busking or selling newspapers but with Bob, Bowen managed to grab the attention, and the hearts, of many. Bob being such a free spirit and a cat who dealt so well with people is what made him adorable. James, needless to say, didn't have to take Bob in, but through the harshest of times, he did a good deed anyway, and was rewarded excellently. No wonder Bowen believes in karma haha It's a shame that Bob passed away in 2020 in an accident. That must have been really heart breaking.
It's such a fantastic and one off tale that it doesn't always read as an autobiography and seems as though the author is just trying to tug at your heartstrings or making it all up for attention but it then clicks that it's all realistic and people like me are too privileged to ever believe that someone could end up in such a way. Drug dependency is no joke of course and leaving his family couldn't have been easy but he restored his relationship with his mother on a 6 week trip to Australia where he visited her. A story full of hope and definitely creates feelings of admiration and determination.

FugaAll Itachi ever wanted was to rid the world of violence, from an exceptionally young age. Danzo didn't promote this idea but rather the opposite. Fugaku and Shisui are unaware of future consequences and supportive as well as a great example respectively. The third ninja war is explained in very little detail considering that this is a full fledged novel relating the events of Naruto. The manga did that better imo
Sasuke too isn't spoken much about and Itachi hasn't yet destroyed the entire clan but him joining the Anbu and the build up to Mukai's assassination I suppose. This is just a guess of mine as I have yet to read this one's sequel, midnight. Mukai is a pretty cool character tbh considering he has similar skills to Neji and is almost as talented as Itachi. Needless to say, it was Danzo who showed Itachi the dark side of the ninja world, or at least, had the most influence.
We got more background information to how Sasuke came to be as well as developed the relationship between Itachi and Shisui as solely through the manga we don't really understand the relevance of their bond. Shisui showed Itachi why his dream mattered. There are some spelling errors here and there and the writing style doesn't exactly flow but it's nevertheless a fun rendition of the life of one of my favourite Naruto characters....more

Rintaro Natsuki is a hikikomori, a guy who spends most of his time inside without giving much of a care in the world, especially after the passing away of his grandfather. He then finds his true passion in the little second hand bookshop he inherited.
Gentle rendition that is set in the perfect location for booklovers all over the world however I didn't much like the translation and the character development. Quite philosophical and somewhat deep but I suppose that the contents of this book would be appreciated more by those who are still new to the literary world. The cat itself doesn't do much but guide Natsuki to save books from their abusive owners. It's also an allegory to the mazes in the main character's mind, the unresolved issues that were left after the original owner of the bookshop dies. What value do books truly hold, should he shut his shop down, is it important for the development of society? Why do people try to find shortcuts whenever picking up a book or instead of pondering over the true message simply pick up the next book without giving much thought to the previous one.
