Since I encountered this pretty book a few months back, the hype was reallllllly scary. BUT C'MON! How often do we encounter carnival-based novels other than The Night Circus???? Plus, this received some pretty awesome ratings, and I couldn't deny it. I went into this knowing nothing, and please do the same!!!
This was really weird. It felt historical, but they live of fricken' islands! We've got bustle dresses, lace, tea, and pinkies-- but also waterfalls and mountains..........................? Perhaps without this island concept, I would've enjoyed it more. [image]
The characters confused me most. From the beginning to the end, the readers received ZERO character development and ZERO emotion-- save for some crying. From page 1, we learned Scarlett was completely useless for herself and sister Tella, who is basically a more evolved Scarlett with weird tendencies to drink and get cozy with every guy within a mile. OH AND THE PROSE----------> "Scarlett's feelings came in colors even brighter than usual. The urgent red of burning coals. The eager green of new grass buds. The frenzied yellow of a flapping birds feathers." This seemed to have become a very popular style of writing in YA fantasy, but its basically YA authors trying to adapt to Adult writing, it does not work. However, a book such as Caraval somehow utilizes this writing well enough. I thank the author for her bright imagery and details in a book about Carnivals. Yet, it does pass off as incredibly tedious.
Did I like it? Sure Did I hate it? Eh. Would I recommend this? No. Try it! If you trust hype enough, give it a go. But I'm at a minority, so take the road you trust more =)

I thoroughly enjoyed every dark aspect, and both types of romance: gay and straight. Every character was a dark cinnamon roll I pitied, rooted for, and wanted to give a big hug :DDDDDD
I REALLLLY want Radu and Mehmed to be a thing. But what happened to Halil Pasha's son???? I thought something was brewing in that sexual tension... Oh and, this is definitely a mature YA...
GIMMMEEEEE THAT 2ND BOOK NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...more
REVIEW 1/3/17 Whew..... I loved it! I'm not sure if there is there is a correct way of saying this (there never will be), but I love the Ripper killings REVIEW 1/3/17 Whew..... I loved it! I'm not sure if there is there is a correct way of saying this (there never will be), but I love the Ripper killings (told ya'). I think unsolved mystery and notorious rumors are fascinating, and I give Kerri two thumbs up for incorporating that into this novel. Anyone could've taken this idea and slapped a title on it, but the period writing and fierce characters bumped up my rating.
The world building of 19th-century London was beautifully described: from the slums of Whitechapel to a circus. Matter of fact, the industrial revolution was at it's apex during this specific century, and some of those details enhanced it even further.
OH... AND I ALMOST FORGOT THE SEXIEST SPECIMEN I'VE EVER ENCOUNTERED IN YA LITERATURE.... [image] Thomas Cresswell is MINEEEEEEEEEEEE. The banter. The flirt. The sarcasm. Frickin', everything he did was sexy.
Audrey Rose was entirely badass and perfect. However, I doubt there ever would've been a woman such as herself-- but because this is YA, we have to include it. [image] I need the second book right now.
EDIT 1/1/17 I've had this for far too long...
EDIT 6/18/16
I need this book so badly. Why can't September come ANYYYYY quicker? Heh, I don't mean to sound pro-murder BUT.... I love this murder case soooo badly, and I think it's also up there with the Zodiac Killer case. The closest I've gotten to "Jack the Ripper" is through the Assassin Creed: Syndicate- Jack the Ripper mini game. BTW: if this book is any similar, I need September even more :D [image]...more

But beI've been into the Gothic genre lately, it's become one of my favorite genres. Poe's work was sometimes depressing- also disturbing at moments. But because I am nice, I gave it 3 stars [image] Here's why my dear friends- I loved the prose and way the stories flowed, despite the AHEMdisturbingness (burying a cleaver into your wife's head) [image] and sometimes it can SERIOUSLY scare you. Either that or I'm just easily scared, actually I can thank my sister for getting me to read his stories (shes a fan) though, there's usually hype over his stories. I just don't see it... Like William Shakespeare, sometimes the stories were dull. [image] I have to say, I kind of have a love-hate relationship with this book. It's complicated.... [image] Anyway, its great for some people who like to read gothic horror, or at least experience the beheading of a mans wife during his hangover. I enjoyed it- not fully- but enough to know SOME of my poor money went to waste. ...more

ERIK LOVER!!!! And I'm proud... [image] I love the Phantom of the Opera, i watch and read almost every constantly. I think Gaston Leroux is a brilliant human being. I'm just going to show you my unexplainable feelings for this beautiful masterpiece.
READING THE FIRST FEW CHAPTERS [image]
How i feel about Erik (the Phantom) [image]
Christine- [image]
Chrisik/Eristine [image]
Bitchy Raoul- [image]
The managers- [image]
Erik being rejected- [image]
KNOWING THAT CHRISTINE KISSED ERIK AT THE END- [image]
I DIED many MANY TIMES- [image] [image] [image]
The plot was poetic and darkly seductive [image]
WHEN THE BOOK FINISHED................... [image] [image]
OKAY so it wasnt well explained but i love it sooooo much!!!!!!!!! I hated Raoul though, and the managers were just son of bitches. PAY THE POOR GUY 20,000 FRANCS greedy little shits.
I imagined Erik to be some grotesque looking skeleton VISUAL AID IN GIFS- [image] Instead when i watched the 2004 movie, I get some sexy looking hunks that LITERALLY LOVE (Mr.Butler) [image] Isn't he good looking????? Don't judge me... Emmy Rossum was perfect and they literally made love every scene and Past the Point of No Return turned up my body temperature wayyyyyy up. [image]
I'm a huge fan and i will always remain a Phan. Phantom of the opera will always be my favorite classic, Leroux beat The Grim Bro's and Hans Christian anderson with this one. Disagree if you please, but HE SERIOUSLY DID! I'm sure all the other books i own look up to P.O.T.O 'cause i treat it like a king. [image]
Okay lets wrap this one up: -I hate Raoul, he's a bitch -I treasure Erik, he the best thing that's ever happened to me. -Christine is a poor decision maker and professional dream crusher -Erik and Christine are my #1 ship -I love all the versions of this novel, whether book or media -FUCK ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS AND WHY CAN'T ERIK RUN OFF INTO THE SUNSET. Wait, he's sexier in the dark.
LISTEN CLOSELY CHILDREN, WHICHEVER BOOKS YOU RECOMMEND AND LOVE OR THAT I LOVE WILL NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER BE CHOSEN OVER P.O.T.O. Because Erik is bae so is the entire story.
-Erik is real, no doubt about it (don't break my dreams) -also i fantasize about the entire story constantly.
