I absolutely adore the premise of their books but I don't like the outcome of them and so I vow to never pick up another one of their books until I hear their premise and repeat that cycle.
Horseman was so far the best read for me from the author but still it fell a bit short. The worldbuilding and the characters were well written and stayed true enough to the original tale. The story was captivating and I didn't want to put the book down until I got all the answers I needed. Who is the Headless Horseman? What connection did he have to Ben? What is killing all those children and why is it afraid of the Headless Horseman?

In the end, the build up of all the supernatural happenings in this book were for nothing. The revelation of the "villain" and the fact that they were behind all the Otherworld Creatures in this book was disappointing. The ending left me wanting something more.
All in all I was pleasantly surprised by this book and now I wish that there were more Sleepy Hollow retellings out there....more

A unique interactive style written story, that you have to pay close attention to what she said for the story to make sense.

After the death of their father and their brother and their mother seemingly losing her mind, Carys and Andreus have to face a situation that never even crossed their minds... One of them will become the next monarch of Eden. But the twins aren't the only ones with secrets and soon they find out that the only ones they can truly trust, are themselves.
I had a hard time understanding the World building in this book and it's magical aspects. We're thrust right into the story without any explanation about Eden and the importance of the Wind in this story. Even now that I'm done with the book, I only know that Eden uses some kind of windmill power to have electricity in town. I'm still confused however about the magical aspect of the winds and why they're so important in this story.
Another thing I also didn't quite grasp is the curse of the twins. They never explain what it entails and how it will destroy the Kingdom. What does it do? How does it affect Carys and why does she have to drink Tears of Midnight to push it down? And if her brother isn't the one cursed, what kind of episodes does he have? Is he epileptic or was the seer wrong and both twins have a curse?
I'm so mad at all the characters in this book, it's not even funny. [image]
Carys is a badass female protagonist that does anything in her power to protect her brother from people finding out about his curse. Ever since she was little she had to endure alot of abuse and humiliations, each time her brother had an episode and each time she drew the attention away from him and towards her, she got punished severely.
Even from the first chapters, I disliked Andreus. The way he let his sister suffer over and over again just to hide his secret, drove me mad. Him and his mother were despicable. They groomed Carys to be her brothers shield and to take alot of suffering, without once carrying about her. Even after the lashing she got because of Andreus, he preferred to console Imogen instead of helping his sister. He didn't even care to ask her is she was ok after. Each time he was only concerned about his own well being and cared only about his wants and need. And then he even had the audacity to get mad thinking that Carys kept things secret from him, when all he ever did was keeping secrets from her.
It took no time at all for Andreus to make a move on his dead brothers fiance, it took even less time than that for him to turn against his sister and to want her dead. [image]
Their mother isn't any better, in fact she might be worse. Stating "....I couldn’t care less about your pain.", after she saw in how much pain her daughter was. All she cared about was her son and made her daughter his protector, letting her get unnecessarily punished without interfering. [image] [image]...more
Neal Shusterman is an autobuy author for me and even tho I haven't read any of his other books yet, I was very excited to pick up Scythe. The premise Neal Shusterman is an autobuy author for me and even tho I haven't read any of his other books yet, I was very excited to pick up Scythe. The premise of this book drew me in immediately and it made it to the list of my most anticipated series. However now that I've read it, the execution left me a bit disappointed.
Let's start off by saying that I'm not a big fan of the writing. For an author that has been publishing books for more than two decades, his writing felt more like a first published novel that an experienced writer. Like the phrase "and then he said something that she didn't expected" or some variation of that, right before the character spoke, was repeated multiple times throughout the story and I hated it every time. The two protagonists were very flat and held no interest for me , they were exciting as two pieces of plain, white bread. Also the romance was non existent between them, Rowan only vaguely showed any interest in Citra and that felt mostly out of camaraderie. The only thing that held my interest was the worldbuilding and the other Scythes. I loved Scythe Faraday and Scythe Curie, they made the book more interesting. Their thoughts and methods on Scythedom gave the whole story more dimension. They weren't even the protagonists but managed to steal the show.
All in all I didn't really dislike the book it just left me disappointed....more
