This one is a bit hard to review since the plot mostly revolves around three characters who are very difficult to get a firm grasp on. I think Bobby was the most likable of the lot, with his naive puppy-like nature that just made you want to both hug and shake him half the time. Jonathan was the strongest character, with all his intricacies and his struggle over his loves and what his life meant to him, but he could also be incredibly frustrating when he wasn't being amusing. I can't say I liked Clare much. She was all right when they first introduced her as Jonathan's heterosexual life partner, but she just declined in personality from there. I never quite got her issues, and she was just unpleasant toward the end. I guess I can see her conflict in raising a child with two men and feeling trapped in a world of decay. But... she was not my cup of tea. Alice also hit the spectrum from intriguing to exasperating. These characters were overall hard because they were so complex and raw and open, Cunningham's usual. And like Cunningham's usual style, the plot was mostly watching them deal with their warped view of the world.
That said, the writing is still poignant and beautiful and they were a fascinating case study in what it really means to love someone for all their flaws and how complicated love can really be. ...more

The mystery was a bit predictable and some of the conclusions weren't that satisfying, but I had fun with the characters and appreciated the descriptions of the setting. I am unsure about the author's decision to have to the narrator relate the tale in a diary, thus forcing any action descriptions to be retold in a sometimes spurious manner. I guess it worked at one point toward the end, when we didn't know the author's situation and she had to recollect it. But overall, it felt lacking from the suspense aspect. Having the narrative told in usual past or present tense might have solved this problem. Both of the female leads were engaging enough without being annoying, as can sometimes happen in romance. The male leads were equally enjoyable, one being more enjoyable than the other by virtue of his loudness. I also felt some things were left hanging at the end, but that might have been intentional.
All in all, a pleasant read, with nothing particularly notable about it....more

I took a ridiculously long amount of time to read this since I was too stubborn to drop it, but I both didn't want to read it and kept having things interrupt my usual reading time. It has major problems with its narrator, who feels compelled to give her quip on her situation every other line. Not only that, she is completely embarrassing and and unbelievable. I'm supposed to accept a trained cop turns into a giddy schoolgirl every time she sees a hot guy? Ew. And the near-sex on assignment, in a school no less. I get it's a romance novel but ew. I hated her. I really only liked the werewolf hunter; he was an interesting character, especially with his German background.
I think what bothered me most about this book was that the story wasn't actually bad. It was fairly interesting (Nazi werewolves and whatnot) and the mystery was fun too. But it just kept getting completely side-lined by this atrocious narrator and her sex obsession (which she repeatedly realizes is dangerous to both her and her job and she KEEPS DOING IT. I hate this type of character. The willfully ignorant.) I would give it a two, but I don't want to encourage ANYONE to put up with this narrator. I can't believe there is a whole series about her. Then again, Bella has a whole series so I guess it's whatever people enjoy reading.

It had a great premise, which was destroyed by bland characters, bland motivations and plodding pacing. Even the beautiful descriptions could not make this palatable. And if it were more than 300 pages, I would have given up on it. The main character is incredibly dull and of course is convinced the first noble boy she's ever met in her life and she's only known for two days is madly in love with her. To the point of referring to him as her "lover" for the rest of the book. Not love. Lover. Ugh. And of course, because this is YA, he is. The wild ferocity of the dragons was the book's saving grace, but it was all but undone by the total lack of personality among any of the dragons. Everything felt forced. The ending picked up the pace considerably, but it was too little too late and everything felt far too convenient. Hideous....more
