She richly describes and develops a locale for the story that is both entrancing and disturbing. In the end, I felt like the author let the floor drop out from underneath the story. Instead of delivering a superb rich ending, the author just sort of stops. Not that I need a happy ending in every book, but an ending with some meaning would have been better.
I will read this author again, though. Lots of good in this book. Just disappointed with the ending and the unanswered questions....more

Unfortunately, the author chose to push the story into dark and uninteresting places by overwhelming the story with another species of people, those who have to eat human brains to live. On top of that, the author used an unenjoyable method of storytelling by flipping back and forth between two different timelines. While I can appreciate an ever-evolving backstory as a way to build suspense in the primary timeline, in this book, it almost felt like the author had two competing stories to tell and then, at the last moment, realized that she needed to weave the opposite stories into each other. Probably would have been better as a collection of short stories instead of an effort at making a novel....more
