Sue me but I love books where someone just solves a problem Anakin Skywalker style (e.g. stabbing someone in the back bc it's the most straightforward and practical option available). The writing style is perfect and I could read about Maud's adventures for hours. ...more

OOF. it's. WOW. it's almost 500 pages and I read it entirely in one sitting/evening. Like you know how when it was 2012 and you watched BBC's Merlin and you were like, wow, what a great dynamic, sure can't wait for this to be explored and deepened and fulfilled, and then it was actually nothing but sadness and betrayal???? This is the kind of fulfillment I've been craving ever since....more

A delightful surprise to realise five more awaited me when I finished this sorrowfully beautiful read. I love love love Cora more than any of the other protagonists (besides perhaps Lundy) and this might be, from a purely satisfactory and literary stand point, the best of the series so far. ...more

And what a let down to realise I really would have preferred it to be three separate books, lol. The whole point of it is you see the same events through three different characters' eyes (with vastly different viewpoints and worlds) but really I mostly was thinking how good it would be to just...expand those into totally different but interconnected series. ...more

Then two days ago I got the notification that THIS book was due and couldn't be renewed and so I cracked the cover - and ended up finishing it that same night. REALLY enjoyed the characters and unlikely friendships and loved the plot twists and turns. ...more

The obligatory caveat here: Murder is bad. That said, it's hard to care too much about Maud's victims (her sister being perhaps the murky and unconfirmed exception) and easy to envy her current livestyle of traveling anywhere she wants and disposing of any irritations in her life with the most direct solution: Murder. After all, whom among us hasn't responded to the pain of a friend or family member by offering to show up at the wrongdoer's door with an axe?...more
