An interesting take on a possession story, the book was short but memorable. The writing was fast paced and full of ominous occurrences. I know others didn't like the end but I thought it was unique. 4 stars. I'll read more from this author....more

I'm Starting to Worry AboWe all know what we are getting into when cracking open a Jason Pargin book - weirdness, hilarity, stupidity and brilliance. I'm Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom is no different. Though not quite as funny as John Dies at the End or as weird as Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits, this one is much more entrenched in real life and real social media....which can be a bit of a bummer... because real life... Overall, I really enjoyed the book, but at times it felt a preachy instead of entertaining. ...more

I haven't read fantaThe Salt Grows Heavy is a short novella by Cassandra Khaw and she wasted no time jumping into the horror of the world she created. I haven't read fantasy for a while. I don't think I was prepared for the level of fantasy of this book, and it took me a while to figure out what was going on. But I ended up enjoying it more than expected. I loved the writing. Khaw weaved a tale reminiscent of the original Little Mermaid but somehow darker. Our unnamed protagonist was both brutal and brutalized. Through her we were ushered into a tale of a village full of murderous children and false gods bent on immortality. The body horror in The Salt Grows Heavy was spectacular. Khaw can certainly paint a gruesome picture of murder, oppression, and vivisection. I didn't like Nothing But Blackened Teeth but I'm happy I gave the author another chance....more

After the last couple I told myself I would never read him again. But then I see a free library audiobook and think to myself 'maybe this one will be better.'
And I have actually enjoyed a few of his books: Home Before Dark, Lock Every Door and House Across the Lake.
Anyway, onto the current disappointment Middle of the Night. The first half of this book was entertaining but it completely fell apart in the second part.
Before this book I would have said that Sager can't write female characters. They are always so over-the-top dramatic, confidentially jumping to ridiculous conclusions, and more than a little dumb. But those are the exact qualities of our male protagonist Ethan.
So I'd revise my statement and say Sager can't write humans very well.

A Certain Hunger is one of those few brilliant books where the female protagonist is bad, not because she was hurt or assaulted or traumatized, but because she's simply born bad. She's not a victim; she's a predator. She's intelligent and leads a relatively normal life aside from occasionally killing and eating her lovers. ...more
