Loved the tongue-in-cheek way that the author went about writing this book as well as the art on every page! It made me think about all the mysteries I’ve read set in this type of setting and which tropes were relevant in those.
I’m trying to get back into reading and it was a nice little book without much effort to help with that!...more

The artist highlights the absurdity of daily life so well and clearly by drawing aliens who are going through common human experiences and describing everything literally. It's both cynical and hilarious and can be used to illustrate many different situations.

I really liked the first part with Kamala meeting Wolverine, since that's pretty much how I would act if I met my heroes lol. It felt pretty realistic and I could live vicariously through her!
It was really the second part I had trouble with. I mean, I didn't have trouble with the message they were going for. But they were just hitting us over the head so much with it that it ended up feeling kind of contrived, and the whole ~working together to bring down the bad guy really made the ending feel less exciting and epic. I was expecting an exciting battle and all a la normal comic book expectations, so I felt a little underwhelmed by it.
I also really missed Kamala's interactions with her community and family. I was really into that in the first book cause they were really what made her relatable to me, and we barely got that in this volume, so I didn't feel as close to her as I did before. But I do still love her and her story and struggles a lot. I think she's an awesome superhero and I am excited to continue her adventures. ...more

I was really confused for a large part of the book because of the ~alternate future stuff going on, and I actually put it down for a while after starting it before picking it up again.
I did enjoy Barney and Clint bonding, and I liked looking into Kate's past, though there was that storyline with her dad working with other villains to get rid of the Hawkeyes from one of the older comics that wasn't addressed, which was disappointing. I do like Kate and Clint though, and although I was more disappointed in this one, I hope there will be more adventures coming up for them. ...more

Kamala is an awesome, spunky, fun character who you can't help rooting for, and I'm definitely planning on reading more of her adventures in the future. ...more

I guess nothing could really top the epic-ness that was Fraction's Hawkeye, but this volume did an okay job with following it up. There were two storylines and I felt like they were trying to force parallels between the storylines. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. I did like seeing Clint's past, but at parts, I felt like the main storyline was being ignored for it. In truth, I wasn't really fond of the main storyline much, and I definitely didn't like how the storyline ended for this volume. The time jump felt really weird and didn't really make much sense to me. I'll see where they go with it, but this comic definitely leaves something lacking, especially compared to the Fraction run. ...more

It was set on a much smaller scale, but that really worked for Jessica Jones, since she's not a superhero in the general sense. Her story works when it's confined to ~regular people's lives. It was a bit heavy-handed on the mutant = gay comparisons, but other than that, it was an interesting story that I enjoyed following that really got into the character development for Jessica as well. I also enjoyed the conversation between Luke and Jessica and the path to their eventual romance, and the date between Jessica and Scott Lang, which was not only good development again, but kind of humorous after everything else that had happened. Finally, I enjoyed having Matt Murdock mentions since it frames Jessica's story in the context of the larger Marvel/Defenders universe. ...more

I really enjoyed the hints to a darker past, which will segue nicely into the next volume that explores Jessica's history, and I also really liked how the crime she was trying to solve here really resonated with her and her history, which I think made it much more personal and intense. I also continue to love Jessica x Scott (even though my ultimate OTP is Jessica x Luke) and Jessica and Matt's friendship. I definitely think I'll reread this comic at some point in the future! ...more

Overall though, I found the show much more compelling than this comic. I feel like we never learn very much of who Jessica is in the comics or her motivation to leave the superhero life behind. The two cases that we follow are alright. The first one was more interesting than the second, though the ending was fairly anticlimactic for the first. The second case started out interesting, but then I became more meh about it, though it gave us a look at Jessica's inner motives a bit more. I also wasn't a huge fan of the artwork, though I might have been spoiled after having just come off of the Fraction Hawkeye series.
I did enjoy that this comic expanded the Marvel universe in that it mentioned multiple other characters (including Matt Murdock!) that are in the world. But it really focuses on how a civilian might live in a superpowered world (even if Jessica isn't exactly a civilian), and I enjoyed that different point of view from other superhero comics. ...more

Everything in the first three volumes had been building up to this, and it was awesome and explosive and full of family and found family and people coming together to defeat the villains. A really awesome story on a smaller scale that doesn't involve superheroes saving the world, but still saving what matters. And Barney made an appearance and I really liked him, but of course, Kate remains my favorite, especially since she saved Clint (again). Also they didn't kill the dog. Thankfully. Animals are not allowed to die.
Knocked off one star for the first Wintertales comic because ??? and also because it was a bit confusing with the division of volumes since I think LA Woman takes place in the middle of this volume and it took me a bit to figure that out.
I would definitely recommend this whole series to anyone wanting to get into comic books, and it was a really good introduction into the world of Marvel comics for me....more
