REASONS TO READ/NOT READ:
Way too many book mashups:
Finally, I understand why everyone is saying that Red Queen is the most unoriginal book ever.Even me:The occasional fantasy reader who picks up a book with gremlins, werewolves or witches either because of the hype or its compulsion somewhere academic, can notice the too familiar tropes/plotlines. You're right everyone,Red queen is a ya fantasy polygamist giving you way too many deja vus.For instance,
The Pageant-Yeah,We have read The Selection,BUT we really appreciate that now we know what will happen if X-MEN ever tried to participate in a beauty contest.
Mare's friendship with Kilorn:Reminded me a little AGAIN of America and Aspen with her feeding him and all.
And all my other references are way too farstretched to mention. So,I'll kindly save you a trip down the memory lane.
Annoying characters:
Mare Barrow is self depreciating, childish, has the lowest self esteem possible with a knack for annoying the hell out of me.She is dramatic, always judgmental, whiny, and blind to the most obvious plots ever written.Girl,The high and mighty Queen Elana is not the Edward to your Bella! She can read minds,Of course she knows everything.BUT she's a angsty teenager(Some people forget they're supposed to write about teenagers when they write YA)at the bottom of the food chain. She just wants.... [image]
All the male characters are cowards,All bark and no bite with silvery blushes. All they need is some pom poms preferably with some tutus.
Boring-est love-triangle ever:
There is a love triangle in the book which isn't even a real love triangle. Because Mare is always helping/rescuing/getting hurt for Kilorn(the supposedly friendzoned guy who is not included in the lovtri for unknown reasons). Also this book is really dry in the romance department.Too instalovey even for fantasy.
Now that I've mentioned all the faults,I realize they are my reasons for enjoying it.Truth be told Red Queen is an okayish with nothing special being its middle name but a really fun read.Like a stupid reality show where you know everyone is behaving stupid but you want to know what happens next.A guilty pleasure like fanfiction. BUT it's fast paced, never witty(So you never waste any time laughing) and unrealistically dramatic.
All the Bright Places made me laugh(who knew a book about suicide could be funny) and cry (girls cry for stupid reasons)at the same time.I enjoyed reaAll the Bright Places made me laugh(who knew a book about suicide could be funny) and cry (girls cry for stupid reasons)at the same time.I enjoyed reading it but I hated every moment of it. I'm not going to delude my rational part of brain just because I had a sobfest. Come on,sometimes we cry on the funerals of people we hate.
To be honest,Theodore Finch is pretty cool guy minus the MY-LIFE-IS-SO-BAD-I-WANT-TO-DIE bakwas. The characters' quirkiness is the only factor that actually makes you want to read the whole thing.Because everyone knew that our beloved Theodore Finch was going to die,Especially when he says things like,
"I would like to welcome you to my death"
in the first chapter. Can't we get Good old happy endings anymore?Dear authors, kindly stop making us cry. Books/movies need to stop romanticizing mental illness or illness of any kind.I know *counts on fingers* five girls who slit their wrists only to become a part of hipster and "in" crowd.THIS.IS.NOT.COOL.AT.ALL.
