(view spoiler)[ Why can Tris resist the serums? We spent tons of book wondering why she could do that and nobody else could, and then we were introduced to another problem. Tobias isn't Divergent, but somehow he can resist certain serums. I am not a big fan of "willpower" explanations for things like that, and that seems to be all we got, besides she's somehow three factions. So everyone in the whole of Chicago has no willpower? Wtf.
Why did we spend so much of the book on Tris and Tobias arguing or making out? This is supposed to be a dystopian science fiction book, and I don't buy that YA has to have half of the novel being about romantic relationships. There was so much new world to explore--they just left Chicago to discover EVERYTHING ELSE--and imo we didn't get enough of that. (hide spoiler)]...more

I did enjoy the part about how the inability to communicate, and thus understand the other side, led to the whole war in the first place. I enjoyed the contrasting of the three Wiggins children against each over, and against what in the end they accomplished. The depiction of what horrible experiences can do to children was poignant. That being said, too much time was devoted to mock battles, and not enough to understanding the world or character development. It was hard to appreciate how the world was in the future. A hero that never loses is dull. Supergenius children become supergenius adults. It's not like all their intelligence dissipates once they turn eighteen. So why on earth are are all the adults (except his teacher at the end maybe?) not geniuses? Why would the military not select at least one genius to watch the children's progress, if it meant saving the whole world? And why is everyone naked?...more

I did enjoy reading this book and I feel she did a good job presenting information in an understandable way. She obviously did a lot of research and it was all very interesting. I enjoyed how she broke the book up into clear-cut sections. But the more I knew about something she was talking about, the less I felt she knew what she was talking about. Which made it a jarring experience because most of what I was reading was new. For instance she seemed to know so little about dissociative disorders that I found myself grinding my teeth in irritation at one point....more
