I’m still shaking my head at all the high praise reviews. The language is robotic and repetitive. The premise was interesting until the many holes in Gwen’s “protective measures� became too big to ignore. A much better version of a similar story is Gillian Flynn’s “Sharp Objects,� or even the documentary “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark.� Maybe those who “loved� this book don’t really love great suspense, but just want to dip their toes in a fast read. Lastly, the editor shares some of the blame.

As I continued to trudge through, it felt as though the joke was on the reader; that this was merely an exercise is doing what you don’t want to do because you’re too proud to stop.
